According to The Points Guy, the minimum spending requirement on the Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® will soon increase to $3,000 within 90 days. Currently, you only have to spend $1,000 within 90 days to get the 40,000 point bonus which is worth ~$400 towards any travel redemption.
The Arrival card has one of the lowest spending requirements, so it makes sense that the minimum spending would eventually increase to match that of other cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred. That said, other Barclaycards have low spending requirements so I wonder if the spending on those will increase as well?
The Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard®I was approved for the Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® instantly last month and will get 40,000 miles (~$420 towards travel) after spending $1,000 (now $3,000). I like the Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® because it is a cash back card so I can use my points towards any flight or hotel. This is great for those times when you want more flexibility and don’t want to be held hostage to find award seats at the low-level. You can also use it for other travel expenses such as cruises etc. and get up to $400 back for those expenses. With the Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® you will earn 2X points on EVERY purchase. Plus, you get 5% miles back when you use your miles towards travel purchases. So you’re effectively getting ~2.1 cents towards travel for every $1 you spend on the card.
Here are some other benefits of the Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® :
- 40,000 Miles after spending $1,000 (now, $3,000) within the 1st 90 days of account opening
- 1 mile can be redeemed for 0.5 cent in statement credits or ~1.1 cents towards travel, so 40,000 miles is worth at least $200 or $400 if redeemed for travel.
- $89 annual fee waived for 1st year; No foreign transaction fee
- Earn 2 miles per $1 on all purchases
Don’t apply for the Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® if you’re looking for first or business class travel. That’s because the $400 sign-up bonus won’t get you much in terms of first class or business class tickets. And you’d have to spend a lot of money on the card to earn enough miles to redeem for a first or business class ticket.
The Capital One Spark card is a business card which offers 2% cash back on all purchases, but has a lower sign-up bonus of $250 to $300. However Capital One will pull your credit score from all 3 credit bureaus instead of the usual one credit bureau from Barclaycard.
It also requires a much higher minimum spending of $5,000 within the 1st 90 days of account opening. So it is understandable why Barclaycard may raise the minimum spending requirement.
The minimum spending requirement on the Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® card
*could* soon increase to $3,000 from $1,000. Update: The minimum spending on the Barclaycard Arrival has ALREADY increased to $3,000 within 90 days. Barclaycard often has low minimum spending requirements on their cards and sometimes even requires you to make only 1 purchase to get the sign-up bonus. I wonder if other Barclaycards will increase their minimum spending requirements as well?
I wouldn’t go out of my way to sign-up for the card if you hadn’t planned on applying for the card.
That said, if you don’t use Bluebird or the other ways to meet the minimum spending requirement, a lower minimum spending requirement could be better than a higher spending requirement. In either case, take a look at my list of 40 ways to complete the minimum spending requirement.
