How Much Is the Capital One Savor Welcome Bonus Worth?

Apply Here:    Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card

With the revamped Capital One Savor, you’ll earn $500 cash back after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening.

And because you’re earning straight cash instead of miles & points, your hands won’t be tied with redeeming the welcome bonus with certain airlines or hotels!

How to Earn Points With the Capital One Savor Card

In addition to the giant welcome bonus, you’ll earn bonus points in certain categories:

  • 4% cash back on dining
  • 4% cash back on entertainment
  • 2% cash back at grocery stores

You’ll earn 1% cash back on all other purchases.

There are NO caps on how much bonus cash back you can earn!  And these aren’t rotating categories that require you to enroll your card.  Just memorize these categories and start swiping, baby!

How to Redeem Your Cash Back

Redeeming the cash back you earn with the Capital One Savor is easy.  You can request a check or statement credit, any time, with no minimum redemption amount.

Or you can set-up an automatic redemption, for example, $25 per month.  Whatever is most convenient for you!

Benefits of the Capital One Savor Card

Travel Accident Insurance

You’ll receive automatic insurance for a covered loss at no extra charge when you use the Capital One Savor to purchase your fare.

Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver

Rent an eligible vehicle with your credit card and you can be covered for damage due to collision or theft.  This is secondary insurance, so if you’re covered by your own insurance, this perk won’t kick in.

Extended Warranty

You’ll get additional warranty protection at no charge on eligible items that you purchase with the Capital One Savor.

Is the Capital One Savor Card Worth the Annual Fee?

The Capital One Savor used to have NO annual fee, and come with less attractive perks.

The card now has a $95 annual fee, waived the first year.  So there’s no risk in opening the card and deciding it doesn’t fit your spending habits.  You can cancel it in ~11 months before your first annual fee is due!

That said, I personally don’t think the card has strong enough perks for me to keep after the first year.  I already have more valuable cards that come with more comprehensive benefits.  That’s not to say I won’t open the card and try it out for a year for free, though!

Does the Capital One Savor Card Have a Foreign Transaction Fee?

No!

Who Is Eligible for the Capital One Savor Card?

As long as you don’t have 5+ open Capital One cards, you’re eligible for the Capital One Savor card!

Just note that Capital One doesn’t process more than 1 personal credit card per 6 months.  So if you’ve opened a Capital One card in the past 6 months, best to wait a little while.

Also, if you’re new to the miles & points hobby, we recommend you open all the Chase credit cards you want first.  Because they tend to give you the Biggest Travel!  And they have strict application rules.

If you’ve opened 5+ cards from any bank (NOT counting Chase business cards and these other business cards) in the past 24 months, you won’t be approved for their best cards.

Barclays Uber Visa

Our Review:   Barclays Uber Visa

Earning 4% back for dining is pretty grand.  But you don’t need a card with a $95 annual fee to do it!

The no-annual-fee Barclays Uber Visa Card earns 4% back for dining purchases.  This card also has NO foreign transaction fees.  So you can earn bonus rewards dining abroad without paying more for your meal.

You’ll also earn:

  • 3% back for hotels and airfare
  • 2% back for Uber rides and online purchases
  • 1% back for all other purchases
  • $50 “subscription credit” for online subscription services (you must spend $5,000+ on your card in a year)

However, the card doesn’t come with nearly as enticing a welcome bonus as the Capital One Savor.  The Barclays Uber Visa will give you $100 after spending $500 on purchases within the first 90 days of account opening.

Apply Here:   Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

If grocery shopping accounts for a big chunk of your spending, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express earns 6% cash back at US supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (1% thereafter).  That’s triple what you’ll get from the Capital One Savor!  You foodies will appreciate the extra cash back when you’re buying all those fancy expensive ingredients.

You’ll also receive 3% cash back at US gas stations and select US department stores.  And 1% cash back on everything else.  This card comes with a $95 annual fee, NOT waived the first year.

The AMEX Blue Cash Preferred comes with a $200 statement credit after you spend $1,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening.

Bottom Line

Capital One Savor.  That’s like a pun!  It’s a great fit for foodies, and it saves you a ton of money.

The card just received an overhaul, and now comes with $500 cash back after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.  Plus, it’s earns more than before on restaurants and entertainment!

You’ll earn:

  • 4% cash back on dining
  • 4% cash back on entertainment
  • 2% cash back at grocery stores

So if you spend a lot on food and are looking for a card with a plump welcome bonus and a simple earnings structure, the Capital One Savor card is worth considering!

If you’re new to miles & points, though, I’d recommend signing-up for all the Chase cards you want first.  Because those are harder to get if you open the Capital One Savor first!
