If you’re a fan of collecting Citi ThankYou points, this post is worth a read.

If you have the Citi Rewards+® Card and any other card that earns Citi ThankYou points, you’ll trigger the 10% points rebate on up to 100,000 redeemed points per year when you combine your accounts.

So if you have a card like the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card, having the Citi Rewards+® Card is a good way to get 10,000 points back every year.  This is an awesome, unexpected power-up — and the real reason why you might consider opening the Citi Rewards+® Card.

The information for the Citi Prestige has been collected independently by Million Mile Secrets. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Here’s how it works.

The Citi Rewards+ card pairs nicely with my Citi Prestige to give me 10% of my redeemed Citi ThankYou points back per year (up to 10,000 points). I wish I’d known this sooner! (Photo by Shane Myers Photography/Shutterstock)

Get Citi Rewards+, Pair It With Another Citi ThankYou Points Travel Credit Card

Having the Citi Rewards+ card will unlock a 10% ThankYou points rebate when you combine ThankYou accounts and redeem points earned from any other Citi ThankYou card, like Citi Prestige or Citi Premier.

If you regularly redeem Citi ThankYou points, this could be a great reason to add the Citi Rewards+ card to your arsenal.

One of the Citi Rewards+ card’s perks is a 10% rebate on up to 100,000 points redeemed per year.  You’ll also earn 2X Citi ThankYou points at supermarkets and gas stations on the first $6,000 spent per year (then 1X), and the points you earn on every purchase will automatically round-up to the nearest increment of 10. That means you’ll never earn less than 10 points on a purchase. Plus, there’s no annual fee.

That’s an amazing perk that may actually make you want to keep your other ThankYou cards.

As an example, say you transfer 16,000 Citi ThankYou points to Qantas to book an American Airlines flight. If you do not hold the Citi Rewards+ card, that transfer would be just that — and 16,000 ThankYou points would be deducted from your account.

But if you’re a Citi Rewards+ cardholder, you’ll get 10% of those redeemed points back. And remember, that’s on up 100,000 Citi ThankYou points per year. That’s a rebate of an extra 10,000 points back per year.

Combining Citi ThankYou accounts

When you open a new Citi ThankYou card, you’ll get a new member account, so all the points you earn are in different buckets, but you can pool them all together in one place. That means no matter which card earns the points, they’re all collected in the same place.

Theoretically, you can do this online, but it never works. The easiest way is to call Citi and ask a representative to combine your accounts. Since linking your accounts gets you up to an extra 10,000 points back per year, the hassle is worth it.

Should you get the Citi Rewards+?

Citi will not let you earn the sign-up bonus from more than one personal card of the same “brand” within 24 months.  So if you open the Citi Rewards+® Card, you can’t earn the sign-up bonus on another ThankYou card, like Citi Prestige or the Citi Premier, for 24 months. Ouch!

Those cards have much bigger sign-up bonuses. So I wouldn’t recommend getting the Citi Rewards+® Card unless you have no intention of opening either of those other cards in the next couple of years.

With the Citi Rewards+® Card, you can earn 20,000 bonus points after you spend $1,500 in purchases with your card within three months of account opening; redeemable for $200 in gift cards at thankyou.com. You also could ask Citi to product change an old card into this one. For a limited time, earn 5 ThankYou® Points per $1 spent on air travel and hotels up to $6,000 in the first 12 months and then 1 ThankYou® Points per $1 spent thereafter. You won’t get a sign-up bonus, but that may not matter, because if you’d like to open the Citi Premier down the road, for example, you’d do much better with the welcome offer from that card instead.

If you have all the other Citi ThankYou cards you want, getting 20,000 Citi ThankYou points is nice for a card with no annual fee.

Keep in mind, opening a new personal Citi card will count against your Chase 5/24 status, so I wouldn’t touch any of them until you have all the Chase cards you want.

Bottom line

The Citi Rewards+® Card may be an attractive choice for ThankYou points enthusiasts. When you combine your ThankYou accounts, the 10% rebate on up to 100,000 redeemed points per year works with other Citi ThankYou cards, like the Citi Prestige and Citi Premier.

It should work any time you redeem your points, including points transfers or travel booked directly through Citi. In this way, the Citi Rewards+® Card gives your other cards a “power up.”
