INSIDER SECRET: The American Express® Gold Card is a solid choice for your overseas purchases because it has no foreign transaction fees (see rates & fees).

The American Express® Gold Card is the best Amex card to use for dining purchases because it earns 4X Amex Membership Rewards points at restaurants. This bonus has been limited to US restaurants, but that will no longer be the case as of June 6, 2019.

The Amex Gold card also comes with up to $120 in yearly dining credits (enrollment required). You can earn a $10 statement credit per month with the following merchants:

  • Grubhub/Seamless
  • The Cheesecake Factory
  • Ruth’s Chris Steak House
  • Participating Shake Shack locations (locations inside ballparks, stadiums, airports and racetrack won’t qualify)

That seems like a limited list, but Grubhub and Seamless are delivery services, so in reality you have 1,000s of locations to choose from.

If you have an Amex Gold card you should keep an eye on your statement because people have reported problems with the 4x restaurant bonus posting to their accounts correctly. Also, restaurants that are inside of other establishments (i.e. hotel restaurant, casino, event venue) may not earn bonus points depending on how the transaction codes.
