AMEX Freezing Some Membership Rewards Accounts
Signing up for credit cards through partner links earns us a commission. Terms apply to the offers listed on this page. Here’s our full advertising policy: How we make money.
Update: Folks on Reddit report their accounts have been un-frozen.Check your AMEX Membership Rewards account!
Via The Points Guy, many folks report not being able to transfer their Membership Rewards points.
The reasons why are NOT clear at this point. But, it appears it’s related to folks who recently signed-up for the publicly available 100,000 Membership Rewards Points offer of The Platinum Card® from American Express offer. The link was available for less than 1 day!

I’ll explain what’s going on and what you should do!
What’s Going On?
AMEX is freezing some Membership Rewards accounts for further review. You can still use your card. But, you’re unable to transfer Membership Rewards points to AMEX transfer partners.
There’s a lot of speculation on forums like Reddit as to why AMEX is freezing accounts. Many folks with frozen accounts indicate they applied for last week’s limited time 100,000 Membership Rewards Point AMEX Platinum offer.
The link was publicly available for a few hours, but was taken down as it seems like it was meant to be targeted.
Some have received their AMEX Platinum card, but haven’t activated it. And their Membership Rewards points from other cards are still frozen.
Others have received the AMEX Platinum card and report no issues.
For example, Million Mile Secrets reader Mary Ann sent in this screenshot showing she already received the 100,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points from last week’s offer. And her account is NOT currently frozen!

What Should You Do If Your Account Is Frozen?
If your account is frozen and you’re not in a hurry to transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points, I would recommend waiting a few days.
AMEX is likely overwhelmed with customer service inquiries at the moment. So calling may not help.
I’m optimistic AMEX will honor the publicly available 100,000 Membership Rewards point sign-up bonus and unfreeze accounts for folks who comply with the terms and conditions.
I’ll update y’all if more information becomes available!
