Earlier today I let you know about the AMEX Platinum (personal and business) bonus categories.  And AMEX just announced another change to the business version of the Platinum card!

Starting tomorrow, October 6, 2016, if you have The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN, your AMEX Membership Rewards points will effectively be worth 2 cents per point when you use Pay With Points to buy any flight with your selected airline through the AMEX travel portal.

And 2 cents per point for Business or First Class tickets on ANY airline booked through the portal.

That’s double what they’re normally worth!

AMEX Business Platinum 50 Back
Folks With the AMEX Business Platinum Card Will Effectively Get 2 Cents per Point When Using the Pay With Points Feature on the AMEX Travel Portal. So You Can Save on a Ticket to Venice WITHOUT Having to Search for Award Seats!

I’ll explain what this change means for you.

If you have the AMEX Business Platinum card, your AMEX Membership Rewards points will be worth up to 2 cents per point starting tomorrow, October 6, 2016.

Because when you redeem them for certain tickets using Pay With Points through the AMEX travel portal, you’ll get 50% of your points back.

This means the 40,000 AMEX Membership Rewards point sign-up bonus on the AMEX Business Platinum card is effectively worth $800 (40,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points X 2 cents per point) in airfare!

Usually it’s only worth $400, because AMEX Membership Rewards points are worth 1 cent per point on the AMEX travel portal.  But because you’ll get 50% of your points back, it’s like getting a value of 2 cents per point.

But be aware, while you’ll get 50% of your points back for ANY Business or First Class ticket you purchase using Pay With Points, you’ll only 50% back for coach tickets booked with Pay With Points on your selected airline.

So choose your airline wisely if you plan on using your AMEX Membership Rewards points for coach travel. 😉

I’d definitely hold off on applying for this card until after tomorrow, in case more changes are announced!

Bottom Line

Starting tomorrow, October 6, 2016, your AMEX Membership Rewards points will be worth TWICE as much for flights booked using Pay With Points through the AMEX travel portal.  But only if you have the The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN

Normally, you get 1 cent per point when you use your AMEX Membership Rewards points to book paid flights through their travel portal.  But with the AMEX Business Platinum card, you can get 50% of your points back.

So the current 40,000 AMEX Membership Rewards point sign-up bonus for the AMEX Business Platinum card is effectively worth up to $800 in flights.

Just remember, you’ll get 50% of your points back for ANY Business or First Class ticket booked through the portal.  But to get 50% back on a coach ticket, you’ll have to use Pay With Points AND fly with your selected airline.

So it’s worth considering your future travel plans when you choose your selected airline!
