$200 AMEX Statement Credit
One of the latest American Express offers is a $200 American Express statement credit when you spend $2,000 or more on the Cathay Pacific website by July 31, 2014.
You have to book your ticket through the specific Cathay Pacific website to get the $200 American Express statement credit.
Let’s say you and your partner wanted to spend Thanksgiving week, November 22, 2014, to November 30, 2014, in Hong Kong.
Two coach tickets on Cathay Pacific from Los Angeles to Hong Kong would cost ~$2,198. But if you registered and paid with your American Express card, 2 coach tickets would cost $1,998 ($2,198 for 2 coach tickets – $200 American Express statement credit).
If you’re already buying tickets to Asia, using your American Express to save $200 is worth it. Because it’s worth saving cash instead of earning Chase Ultimate Rewards points, Citi ThankYou points, or Barclay Arrival points.
For example, if you used your Chase Sapphire Preferred you would get ~4,396 Chase Ultimate Rewards points (~$2,198 in airline tickets X 2 Chase Sapphire Preferred travel bonus). You’d have ~$44 (if you redeem for cash back) or ~$66 in Ultimate Rewards points (~4,396 x 1.5 cents per Ultimate Rewards ).
So $200 cash is better than $66 in flights!
So it’s better to save cash than collect points with this promotion. But be sure to check prices on Priceline.com, Orbitz, and Kayak to make sure you’re paying the lowest price.
