Million Mile Secrets Reader, Fran, emailed:

Can you have both the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express and Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card at the same time?

Yes, you can!  That’s because the AMEX Gold Delta SkyMiles card and AMEX Platinum Delta SkyMiles card are different credit card products.

Can I Have Both The AMEX Delta Gold And AMEX Delta Platinum Cards At Once
Travel Far and Wide With the Bonus Miles You Earn With the AMEX Delta Gold and AMEX Delta Platinum Cards

I’ll explain why.  And give you some ideas of how to spend your Delta miles!

Can’t Choose Between the Increased Delta AMEX Sign-up Bonuses?  You Don’t Have To!

Link:   My Review of the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express

Link:   Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card

Both the AMEX Delta Gold and Delta Platinum credit cards have increased sign-up bonuses for a limited time!

With the AMEX Delta Gold, you’ll earn 50,000 Delta miles after spending $2,000 in purchases within the first 3 months, and a $50 statement credit on a Delta purchase in the first 3 months.

And with the AMEX Delta Platinum, you’ll earn 70,000 Delta miles and 10,000 Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) after spending $5,000 within the first 3 months.  You’ll also get a $100 statement credit when you make a Delta purchase in the first 3 months.

And you can have both cards at once, because American Express considers them different credit card products.  So you can get 120,000 Delta miles from signing-up for both credit cards!

Remember, AMEX will only process 1 credit card application every 7 days.  So if you try and apply for both cards on the same day, the second card will be processed after 7 days.

American Express will only allow you to have 5 credit cards with them at once (not including charge cards like The Platinum Card from American Express).  So if you already have 5 AMEX credit cards, you can cancel 1 of them before applying for 1 of these cards.

Keep in mind, American Express only allows folks to get the sign-up bonus ONCE per person, per lifetime, on ALL their cards.  So if you’ve had either card before, you will NOT be eligible to earn the sign-up bonus again.

What Can You Do With 120,000 Delta Miles?

You can get Big Travel by signing-up for both the AMEX Delta Gold and Delta Platinum credit cards.  With 120,000 Delta miles, you can get:

  • $1,200 off paid airfare with Delta
  • 2 coach round-trip tickets to Europe from the US
  • First Class ticket from the US to Hong Kong (with 40,000 miles left over!)
  • 6 round-trip tickets in coach for a family trip from Chicago to Toronto

Bottom Line

You can have both the AMEX Delta Gold and AMEX Delta Platinum at the same time.  And with the limited-time increased welcome bonuses, you’ll receive 120,000 Delta miles if you sign-up for both cards!

You can only receive the sign-up bonus ONCE per person, per lifetime, on all AMEX cards.  And AMEX will only let you hold 5 of their credit cards at once.  So if you already have 5 AMEX cards, you should cancel 1 of them before applying for an AMEX Delta card.

The current public offer for the Delta Gold Card is 30k bonus miles for $1,000 spent but if you want to use my refer a friend site it’s 50k for first $2,000 in 3 months and another 10k after $1,000 in the first 6 months + $50 statement credit. Feel free to email me at joetheoneandonly att g mail dot com for the offer!

In 2013 my wife applied for and received the AMEX Delta skymiles Gold Card with a sign up bonus of 30,000 points after meeting the spending requirements. She already had an AMEX Platinum Skymiles card. We were told over the phone by their representative that she would get the 30,000 mile bonus even though she had the Platinum sky miles card and previously received bonus sign up points for that card. After spending the required amount she did not get the 30k sign up points. We contacted Delta and were told that she was not eligible for the sign up bonus on the gold card since she already had the Platinum and received the bonus for that. We pushed the issue and ultimately talked with one of the high octane folks with the sky miles program and was basically told we were not entitled to the points. We both have been very good long time AMEX customers. The gentleman agreed to deposit 10,000 points to her skymiles account to appease us. She did close the gold card but kept the platinum.

If I understand it correctly you wrote that one could apply for both cards and get the bonus for both. Has the policy changed on this since 2013? I know you can get the business card and one personal card and get both bonuses which we subsequently did. Although we are not eligible for anymore sign up bonuses I was just curious about someone who is eligible. Can they in fact get both bonuses now?

Thanks,

Frank C.

Great Site Question: Do you hang on to all of the cards that you sign up for or do the promotion and cancel the card when you have satisfied the requirements so you can do the promotion in the following year? Does that not affect your credit score if you do that?

@Sam – I keep my card open and evaluate the benefits after 10 months and it is time to pay the annual fee for the 2nd year. Here’s a post on credit scores —> https://millionmilesecrets.com/2013/03/18/cancel-credit-card-credit-score/
