You’ll actually earn at least 63,000 American Airlines miles (60,000 bonus miles + at least 1 mile per $1) after meeting the $3,000 minimum spend.

Here are 5 ideas on how the 60,000 point sign-up bonus can get you soaking up the sun and relaxing with family or friends!

1.   Miami Area

South Florida is home to many beaches and has warmer weather almost year around.  The region has beaches that stretch from West Palm Beach in the north to Miami in the south, giving folks plenty of options to choose from.  Some of the most popular ones include Miami Beach, Pompano Beach, and Delray Beach.  We enjoyed a break from the cold winter in January by taking a weekend trip to Deerfield Beach, which is just north of Fort Lauderdale.

Leave Your Winter Blues Behind and Start Planning Your Beach Vacation Now Using American Airlines Miles!

Miami International Airport is a hub for American Airlines, so there are direct flights available from many cities across the US.  Using your American Airlines miles can cost as little as 7,500 miles each way for flights 500 miles or less, otherwise flights start at just 12,500 miles each way.

2.   Los Angeles Area

If the West Coast is more up your alley, the Los Angeles area is also a great option for warmer weather year around and many beaches to choose from!  Just minutes from the airport you can find Venice Beach, which has a great boardwalk area with a very artistic culture.  Santa Monica is also close to the airport with a great pier and amusement park!

If you’re looking to get a little further away from the city, Southern California has beaches all down the coastline!  We found Oceanside to be a nice low key beach, but it will require driving about ~2 hours south from the airport towards San Diego.

Also a hub for American Airlines, Los Angeles International Airport is great for many direct flight options with flights costing as little as 12,500 miles from all over the continental US!

3.   Cancun

Are you looking for something a little more international?  Folks love Cancun for great hospitality, all inclusive resorts, and tasty food.  Off the beach people enjoy the unique culture, historical sites, and of course the weather!

American Airlines has several direct flights to Cancun, not only from their hub locations like Dallas, Chicago, and Philadelphia, but even seasonal options from places like Nashville and Pittsburgh.  And flights here cost as little as 12,500 American Airlines miles each way during off peak times, and as little as 15,000 American Airlines miles at other times.

4.   Hawaii

Want to finally take that Hawaiian vacation?  This could be done with the help of your bonus American Airlines miles!  Whether you want the lively atmosphere of Waikiki Beach on Oahu, the peaceful scenery at Poipu in Kauai, or the black sand beaches on the Big Island, Hawaii has diverse landscapes and cultures that even folks who typically don’t prefer the beach can enjoy!

Sand and Shores Are Great for Surfers on the North Shore of Oahu!

With flights available to all 4 of the main islands, you’ll often find the most available award seats to Honolulu.  Off-peak award flights start at just 20,000 American Airlines miles each way, so you could have enough for 3 one-way tickets!

5.   Hilton Head

Hilton Head in South Carolina is a hot spot in the Southeast for many reasons.  The island is lined with beaches offering countless accommodations, with bike riding and golfing as some of the most popular activities.  Nearby Savannah is also a great city to check out while you’re in the area!

With non-stop flights from many of American Airlines’ hubs, you can fly to the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport for as little as 12,500 American Airlines miles each way.

Should You Consider the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Card?

The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select card has a $99 fee that is waived the first year.  In addition to the increased sign-up bonus after meeting minimum spending requirements, the card also offers:

  • Free first checked bag for you and up to 4 travel companions on the same reservation (domestic flights only)
  • Preferred boarding for you and up to 4 travel companions on the same reservation
  • 25% off eligible in-flight purchases
  • Receive 10% of your redeemed miles back, up to 10,000 miles per calendar year
  • Reduced Mileage Awards – get discounts up to 7,500 miles round-trip on award flights to certain airports

With these perks, I have held onto this card for a few years now, and it could make sense to add it to your wallet as well.  However, even if you are unsure if this card is right for you, keep in mind that the annual fee is waived the first year.  So you can try this card out for ~11 months and maybe even book a beach vacation during that time.  🙂

You won’t earn the sign-up bonus for this card if you have opened or closed any other personal Citi AAdvantage Card (like the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ Mastercard®) in the past 24 months.  This only includes cards in the AAdvantage “family” issued by Citi, not other cards they issue.

The American Airlines cards issued by Barclays also do not count against this rule because they are issued by a different bank.  This also does not include their AAdvantage business card, the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®.  Otherwise, you should be eligible for the bonus if you are approved for the card.

Bottom Line

For a limited time, you can earn 60,000 bonus American Airlines miles with the Citi AAdvantage Platinum card after spending at least $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of opening your account.  Your miles could be enough to take that beach vacation you have had on your mind!  Whether East Coast, West Coast, or somewhere off the coast like Hawaii—you could be enjoying sun, sand, and waves with the help of your miles!

If you plan on applying to take advantage of this increased offer, what beach trip do you have in mind?
