I’m not loyal to any rental car brand.  When I rent a car, my biggest concern is finding the agency with the best price.

I usually rent the cheapest car, which is usually an economy car.  Often times, I get upgraded to a compact or a mid-size car, because car rental companies don’t have a large stock of economy cars on the lot.

During my recent visit to San Francisco, I received my all-time favorite Avis free upgrade!

My Complimentary Upgrade Usually Puts Me Behind the Wheel of a Minivan

Well, I finally received an upgrade worth sharing.  Avis handed me the keys to a sleek red 2016 Ford Mustang!

I can confirm the speedometer needle is fully functioning.  The windows must have been smudged, because everything on the highway was blurry.

I loved the experience of driving such a fast car, but I would never buy one.  I’m happy with my 10 year old Honda Civic!

Bottom Line

I was delighted when Avis upgraded my rental to a 2016 Ford Mustang!

What’s the fanciest rental car upgrade you’ve received?

  1. I can do you one better… had an economy automatic rented in Bologna, Italy for a week. Got there and they couldn’t find the keys to any cars with an automatic. They sent me out to the lot and told me that someone would meet me. Got there and they handed me the keys to a brand new Jaguar XJ-L. Great car… only issues: a British GPS speaking in Italian… the car doesn’t actually fit on the street of most of the Italian hill towns… and I put a $170 tank of diesel in it one day. That said, 210kph on the Autostrade made up for it.

  2. Thanks also to Avis, we lucked out last month in Kona, Hawaii … Ford Mustang CONVERTIBLE upgrade. We had reserved a compact car but apparently they were all gone when we arrived to pick it up. When the attendant offered the the FMC instead, I asked suspiciously if there would be any extra charge. The attendant said, ‘Now that wouldn’t be very aloha of us, would it?’ The best part — while I was off getting the car, my wife waited outside and chatted up some others. I emerged keys in hand. She asks, “Which car did we get?” I point to the FMC. No one believes me … till I click the remote which flashed the lights. Avis made me an instant rock star! What a great way to start our Hawaiian vacation!

  3. got a mini cooper S with a 6 speed once. I didn’t even realize domestic agencies had manual transmission cars.

  4. In LA I had gotten an upgrade to a Dodge Challenger, another time I did a car reposition from Savannah to Tampa and got upgraded to a Dodge Yukon XL.

  5. A couple years ago I got upgraded from economy to a mustang convertible in Florida with Budget. Last year, we were in Denmark and got upgraded from an economy car to a 3 series BMW with only 1100 km on the odometer by Hertz. Looking forward to many more as I continue to travel as these add to the feeling of a successful points trip.

  6. The best upgrade not taken was when I booked my son and his new bride a full size pickup for a weekly rate of $202 for their Denver honeymoon and ALAMO offered him a Challenger or Mustang convertible for no extra charge. After a short, sad discussion, they decided to keep the 2017 Ford 150 with 12 miles. I don’t think my son is quite over that one yet. The good news is he didn’t get a speeding ticket with the truck.

  7. It happened to my wife. She needed a local rental because her car was in the shop for a couple of days. Because her car was towed to a shop via AAA, she was entitled to a one day free rental from Hertz. After it was arranged, we went to the Hertz counter at the Honolulu International Airport expecting the usual low end, economy (meaning hand crank windows and a working AC, but that’s it) The agent told us we could pick any vehicle along the wall and a 2016 Fiat 500 was parked in front of a row of “typical economy cars” .
I pointed out the Fiat and joked about taking it. My wife asked the lot attendant and she replied that the Fiat was considered in our range!!! When she drove it to work, everyone was asking around “who’s driving the Fiat?”
