You can earn Starwood points when you use Uber if you have 1 completed Starwood stay in the current year.

So many folks were curious if the 2 stays and 5 nights that you earn from the Starwood personal (Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express) or business (Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express) card counted towards the stay requirement.

Normally only paid stays count during promotions.  But Starwood is being generous and allowing folks to count award stays and Cash and Points stays too!

This is great news!  So you can use Cash and Points at a Category 1 hotel like the Four Points by Sheraton Kansas City Airport.  And then be eligible to earn Starwood points on your next Uber ride!

Bottom Line

You can earn Starwood points on Uber rides if you’ve stayed at Starwood at least 1 time in the current year.

The Starwood (personal) or (business) card gets you 2 stays and 5 nights each year, but those will NOT count towards the stay requirement.

But amazing news!  Starwood stays paid with cash, points, and Cash and Points will count as a qualifying stay to earn points with Uber!

Will this change your thoughts about linking your Starwood and Uber accounts?

  1. “The Starwood (personal) or (business) card gets you 2 stays and 5 nights each year…” I don’t see anything to this effect in the personal nor business card terms; is it an estimate based on the 25,000 points (which would only apply once)?

  2. Sorry, found it: https://www.americanexpress.com/us/credit-cards/benefits/detail/credit-five-night-2-stays/starwood. It isn’t in the signup agreement but I’m sure it’s been covered before.

  3. Do you have to be checked into your Starwood hotel romo when you take your Uber ride? What if I take Uber to the hotel, check on, check out, and then take Uber from the hotel. Do you think those count? Thanks.

  4. I suggest that everyone contacts SPG to complain about the restrictions. If the management receives a lot of emails, they might lift the “stay first, start earning points thereafter”. I was also told by SPG customer service that only personal stays will count. I booked a stay for a friend in June and I was told it will not count unless I personally check in. I don’t expect to book a stay for myself before December, so everytime I use Uber now I have “negative thoughts” about this whole deal. Please express your disappointment to them too. https://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/support/index.html

  5. Each time I’ve tried to link my accounts I run into a problem. I get through until the Privacy Policy warning, I agree, and then I get a page that says an error has occurred.

Did this happen to anyone else?
