The New Barclaycard American Airlines Cards

I’ve written about the Barclaycard US Airways card being switched to the new American Airlines card.  You should receive your new card between April 1, 2015, and July 15, 2015.

Most folks will receive the Barclaycard American Airlines Red card.  Some of the perks that come with this card include:

  • 1st checked bag free for you and up to 4 traveling companions
  • Priority boarding
  • $100 flight discount after spending $30,000 in a calendar year
  • 2X American Airlines miles on American Airlines & US Airways purchases
  • 10% of redeemed miles back (up to 10,000 miles per year)

There will still be an $89 annual fee.  Check out my full review for more details on this card.

We previously thought there would be only 2 versions of the American Airlines card.  But according to, View from the Wing, there will actually be 4 new Barclaycard American Airlines cards coming soon!

Note: These cards will NOT be open to new applications.  They are only available to folks who already have the US Airways card.

Again, the new cards will start being sent out starting on April 1, 2015, so there isn’t much time left to apply for the Barclaycard US Airways card (and earn the sign-up bonus) before it’s no longer available!

We don’t get a commission for this card, but Emily and I always tell you about the best deals!

Bottom Line

The Barclaycard US Airways card will soon be switched to the new American Airlines Aviator card.

And when you register for the promotion, you can earn 50% bonus miles (up to 10,000 miles) on spending with either card through June 30, 2015.  This is a great deal and it only takes a few minutes to sign-up!

  1. So if I’m understanding correctly, if I put 20k worth of non-airline spend on my US Airways card between now and Jun 30 i will end up with a total of 30k miles? Just want to make sure I’m understanding correctly…

  2. I also got an offer for 15,000 bonus miles if I put $750 spend on the card in each of Feburary, March and April. I guess we should all be reading our communications from this card for offers.

  3. Just signed up, shame I can’t cancel this and reapply to get another 50k miles, sure would help my goal of taking wife to be to London and Paris. While I’m at it, thanks so much for your website, it’s been a big help and I think will not only make her dream come true but save me potentially thousands, if not tens of thousands, of dollars.

  4. I currently have the US airways card from Barclay’s. Does any of the rebranded barclays’s card after the merger, would allow access to the admirals lounge?

  5. My wife and I each have the US Airways MC and recently completed a year (no annual fee 1st year). Called to cancel last month and had $89 fee for new year waived on both cards. Keeping MY got me a $2k spend for 10,000 miles, which I accepted. Wife’s card had NO offer attached, as per the phone rep.

  6. I just recently opened this card to get the 50k miles before the merger. My plan was to open a Citi AA card soon as well to get another 50K miles. Do you think that will still be an option once the Barclay card switches over to the AA card from USAir? I hesitate to open the Citi AA card right now b/c I’m busy spending money to reach the 110k mile threshold for the CP on SW.

  7. I was never given an offer of 750/15K miles or anything. Is there a chance of getting this if I called Barclay’s?

  8. @ Jessica Having a Barclays AA card will have no effect at all on applying for a Citi AA card. If anything, Citi will be eager to take your business away from Barclays by giving you a Citi card. 🙂

  9. does this mean if I use the barclay shopping portal, the boost points won’t count if my card is activated to receive the +50% more miles offer?

  10. I signed up but have not received double miles. Am corresponding with Barclay right now. At first, they said that they are “unable to locate the specific promotion for double points.”

  11. I can’t seem to find the 50% bonus offer after logging into my new Barclay’s US Airways MasterCard account.

Any suggestions on where it is I should be looking for this great offer?

  12. The miles will post 6-8 weeks AFTER the promotion ends is what it says, which is June 30, 2015. I called Barclay to see how to register and I was already registered. If you log into your account, it should pop up on your main screen to register which is what it did for my husband’s account. If not, give them a call.
