The best perk of the Club Carlson Premier Rewards card is the free night when redeeming 2 or more award nights.

Club Carlson

Club Carlson is the loyalty program for Club Carlson hotels.

There are Club Carlson brand hotels in the US and over 100 countries.  Club Carlson hotels include Country Inns and SuitesRadissonRadisson BluPark Inn by Radisson, and Park Plaza.

Although there aren’t as many Club Carlson hotels in the US, they have lots hotels in Europe, especially in the United Kingdom.  Award nights start at 9,000 Club Carlson points and there are no blackout dates.

It’s worth paying the annual fee because you get 40,000 Club Carlson points every card year renewal.  When combined with the free award night, it’s like getting 80,000 Club Carlson points for $75!

Club Carlson normally sells points for 0.7 cents per point (sign in required).  You would pay $280 to buy 40,000 Club Carlson points.  So you’re saving $205 ($280 cost to buy 40,000 Club Carlson points – $75 annual fee with 40,000 Club Carlson point annual bonus)!

Bonus Club Carlson points post within 2 months of your card renewal.

Don’t Use Your Club Carlson Card Outside the US or You’ll Pay Foreign Transaction Fees

Points Earned for Spending

Club Carlson is generous in the amount of points given on paid hotel stays.

You earn:

Emily and I sometimes eat in the hotel, but we also order delivery.  Because we can earn 20 Club Carlson points for every $1 we spend, we’re more likely to eat at the hotel.

Note:  The fine print says if you’re not eligible for the Club Carlson Premier Rewards Visa Signature card, US Bank may issue you a regular Visa Signature card.  The sign-up bonus on this card is only 60,000 Club Carlson points, which isn’t as good!

As mentioned above, some folks might get the Club Carlson Rewards Visa Signature card which gives you less of a sign-up bonus and less perks.  But there’s no way to be certain of which card you’ll get until you apply.  I really don’t like it when banks do this!

You get 50,000 Club Carlson points after your 1st purchase with the Club Carlson Rewards Visa Signature card.  And 10,000 points after you spend $1,500 within the 1st 90 days.

With the Club Carlson Rewards Visa Signature card you also get:

  • 6X Club Carlson points per $1 spent at Club Carlson hotels
  • 3X Club Carlson points per $1 spent on everything else
  • 25,000 Club Carlson point annual bonus when you renew your card
  • Free Club Carlson Silver elite status
  • 1 free night when you book 2 or more consecutive award nights

The $50 annual fee is NOT waived.

But you could get a free night when you book 2 award nights if you have the Club Carlson Premier Rewards Card!

How Can You Use the Free Night?

You can only use the free night on award stays, NOT paid stays.

This perk makes the Club Carlson Premier Rewards Card worth keeping because your Club Carlson points can be worth up to 50% more (if you book your stays 2 nights at a time)!

Get 1 Free Award Night When You Stay 2 Nights at the Radisson Blu Hotel Champs Elysees, Paris, If You Have the Club Carlson Card

However, you have to book 2 or more consecutive nights.

You can only get 1 free night per award stay.  So if you book 2 award nights, you get 1 free night.  And if you book 4 award nights, you still only get 1 free night.

How to Get 2 Free Award Nights on “1 Stay”

If you and your partner both have the Club Carlson Rewards Visa Signature card, you could get 2 free nights on 1 stay.  You would book the 1st 2 nights in your name using your Club Carlson points.  Which gives you the 3rd night free because of the free award night with your Club Carlson Rewards Visa Signature card.

The next 2 nights are booked using your partner’s Club Carlson points.  And if your partner also has the Club Carlson Rewards Visa Signature card, you get the 6th night free.

Bottom Line

You can get 85,000 Club Carlson points from the Club Carlson Premier Rewards card after you spend $2,500 within the 1st 90 days.

The best perk of the Club Carlson Premier Rewards card, and the lesser Club Carlson Rewards Visa Signature card, is the free award night when you book 2 or more consecutive award nights.

I recently got a Club Carlson Premier Rewards card because we’ll be traveling to Scandinavia next year.

Where have you used your free night award?

  1. Your description is slightly inaccurate when describing how the free night works. No worries, it’s very common.

If you book 2 or more nights, the last night is free. So you can book 2 nights total and the second night (aka “last”) will be free. You do not need to stay 2 nights and then get the third night free

  2. You say that you get 20 points per $1 isn’t it 20 points for staying and also 10x or 10 points per $1 using the card for 30x?.

Also you have a photo of a meal at the Hilton in Hong Kong which is not a Club Carlson hotel I don’t believe. I understand your point about eating at the hotel however you also said not to use the card outside the USA due to the transaction fees. So the photo is kinda not applicable. Sorry not trying to split hairs.

Good post on this btw. Thanks.

  3. @ Daraius: Did you or Emily charged by foreign transaction fees when using the Club Carlson card to pay for meal at Nicholini’s in the Conrad Hilton in Hong Kong? although you got 20 points/dollar spent but forex charges kinda ruin the deal.

  4. Good post.
I disagree on one point. Your warning about not using this card abroad should probably come with a qualifier. Do NOT use it for general spending while abroad; DO use it if you decided to dine in the hotel. The 3% foreign transaction fee will be easily offset by your 10% discount that you will get (not to mention 10 points / $ ).

  5. @AndrewS is it really the case that you can get the free night as the 2nd night on a 2-night stay? I have this card and when I’ve tried to book stays previously, the Club Carlson site only shows the “hey you got a free night!” message when the dates booked are for 3 nights total, not 2.

  6. Do you know if this card is churnable and how Business card is different than personal one

  7. @KWu – yes T&C state when booking rewards nights with points, the last night is free on stays “2 nights OR longer”

Please see flyertalk thread for more information

  8. 2thepoint, these cards are such a pain to get in the first place that the thought of churning them is a fool’s move. Beside, the annual fee isn’t waived and they give you 40k points just for sticking around. I would just keep it. Even if you use it once with the 40k points and take advantage of the free award night, you come out ahead. Plus you can buy points to redeem for free award nights, making it worth keeping.

  9. haha…you used a Green Bay, WI hotel for a booking option. Unless coming for a packers game, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don’t waste your valuable club carlson points to travel to Green Bay!

  10. @ Kayla, I live in Green Bay, WI. What’s wrong with Green Bay, WI? The crime rate is WAY below the national average, excellent school system, low cost of living, and we have the best NFL team in the nation! Come, use your points at this Club Carlson hotel and see what a great city Green Bay really is!

  11. This is one of our favorite cards. You can’t beat the 2 for 1. Just last month we took a trip to Chicago and stayed 2 nights at Radisson Blu Aqua. The hotel was awesome. Only 50k pts total for both nights.

  12. @ KWU and @ AndrewS, Andrew is right. You book 1st night with points, 2nd night is FREE. I did the trial it shows 2 nights for only 70K points @ Radisson Blu Paris. If you want to stay 4 nights with 2 nights paid with points and 2 nights FREE, you MUST have 2 Club Carlson VISA and do alternatively like Darius said. 1st night (points); 2nd free; 3rd (points); 4th night free.
