Million Mile Secrets reader Matthew Riggieri commented:

I had gotten the Citi ThankYou Preferred card years ago, and have kept it since it has no annual fee.  I applied for the ThankYou Premier card so I can transfer points to Singapore Airlines.  Can I transfer points from the Preferred to the Premier card?

Matthew is referring to transferring Citi ThankYou points to their new airline transfer partners, which include Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and most recently Flying Blue (Air France and KLM’s frequent flyer program).

You Can Transfer Citi ThankYou Points to Airline Partners, but Only If You Have the ThankYou Premier, Prestige, or Chairman Card

You can only transfer points earned from the Citi ThankYou PremierCiti Prestige, and Citi Chairman cards directly to airline partners.

Matthew just got the Citi ThankYou Premier card, but he wants to know if he can transfer points from his Citi ThankYou Preferred card to his ThankYou Premier account and then to airline partners.

Yes You Can!

If you have the Citi ThankYou Premier, Citi Prestige, or Citi Chairman (no longer available to new applicants) cards, you can combine points from other ThankYou points earning cards (like the Citi ThankYou Preferred, Citi ThankYou Preferred for College Students, or CitiBusiness ThankYou card) into ONE account.  And then transfer them to airline and hotel partners!

You Can Use Citi ThankYou Points for Award Tickets on Airlines Like KLM (but Not on Their Inflatable Planes!)

If Matthew wants to combine points from his Citi ThankYou Preferred card and Citi ThankYou Premier account, he can do so by going to the Citi ThankYou website and clicking on “Combine ThankYou Accounts.”

Matthew Could Transfer His ThankYou Points to Etihad and Get Pampered in First Class!

If you already have a Citi ThankYou Preferred card, it’s a good card to keep for a long time to build your credit history, because it has no annual fee.  But by signing-up for the Citi ThankYou Premier or Citi Prestige cards, you’ll be able to combine all of your Citi ThankYou points and transfer them to airline partners or Hilton hotels.

Bottom Line

Million Mile Secrets reader Matthew wants to know if he can combine points from his Citi ThankYou Preferred card to his new Citi ThankYou Premier card, then transfer them to Citi’s new airline partners.

Yes, he can!  As long as you have the Citi ThankYou PremierCiti Prestige, or Citi Chairman card, you can combine points from other ThankYou points cards and then transfer them to airline partners (plus Hilton hotels).

Matthew should keep his Citi ThankYou Preferred card, because it has no annual fee and can help build his credit history.

Thanks for the question, Matthew!

  1. Can you use Thankyou points from banking relationship for transferring to airline partners?? Ofcourse, assuming you have Premier or Prestiege cards. Tnx

  2. Hi,
Your article is really helpful! Thanks a lot! I do have one question:

As I read the fine prints in the ‘Thank you Premier’ card, it says ‘Unless you are participating in a limited-time offer, you will earn: 3 ThankYou Points for every dollar you spend on purchases at restaurants …’.

What does that mean ‘unless’? Is it possible there is another ‘limited-time offer’ that is better than this offer?

  3. Can one transfer these Thankyou points to Airline partner account of spouse or is this transfer restricted to one’s own account?

  4. also, it seems that to avail of the full 50K offer, one has to keep the card for the second year and pay $125 annual fee (which is not bad if you get 50K plus miles)

  5. Another question – let’s say an airline has from its frequent flyer program, a round trip ticket to Australia for 100K miles and I have 100K Thank you points. The thank you program provides 20% fewer points needed if redeemed for travel.

So, if I use Thankyou points for travel on the above airline, will I be able to book my ticket for 80K miles? if so then it seems to be better to keep Thankyou points else transfer to airline loyalty program.

  6. Hello Darius,

Thanks for your reply. I think I might have confused you with the way I worded my question. What I meant to ask is – Can I transfer my Thankyou points to my spouse’s frequent flyer account? Or does the points transfer have to be made ONLY to my frequent flyer account?

    Please let me know.

  7. Got the answer in fine print.

In order to transfer your Points to a participating Travel Loyalty Program using the Points Transfer feature on thankyou.com, you must have a valid membership account with the applicable Travel Loyalty Program (“Travel Loyalty Program Account”) and the first and last names on both your ThankYou Member Account and Travel Loyalty Program Account must match.

So cannot transfer points to freq flyer account of spouse but can transfer points to thankyou points account of spouse and need to redeem them within 90 days. This redemption can be made then to the point recipient’s freq flyer account.

    Hope that helps.

  8. Hi Darius, thank you for this info. I converted my Citi Select Visa AAdvantage to Citi Thank You Preferred, and was wondering how I can benefit using this card. Your article is timely, for now I know I should apply for the Citi Premier Thank You (using your link, of course) to earn the bonus and combined my points.

I’m curious if I transfer my Thank You Points to Singapore (for example), will those combined with Singapore miles I transfer from UR? Thank you.

  9. Is it possible then to transfer ThankYou points to Eva Air then transfer those points to United?
