Why You Want an Iberia Account

Link:   Iberia Plus

Link:   Sign-Up for an Iberia Plus Account

Iberia Plus is the frequent flyer program of Iberia, a Spanish airline and member of the oneworld alliance.  So you can use Iberia Avios points on partner airlines like American Airlines and British Airways.

You can also transfer British Airways Avios points to Iberia!

But there are some rules to transferring Iberia Avios points:

  • Your Iberia account must be at least 90 days old
  • Your Iberia account must be “active” (have earned at least 1 Iberia Avios point)

Earning the 50 Iberia Avios points in “The Great Avios Conquest” will activate your Iberia Avios account and allow you to transfer Iberia Avios points to your British Airways Avios account.

2 Ways to Use Iberia Avios Points

You can also use Iberia Avios on Iberia.  However, they charge fuel surcharges on award flights.  Although they charge lower fuel surcharges on certain flights than British Airways.

So you should do the math to see if it makes sense using Iberia Avios points for award flights.

1.   Reduced Iberia Avios Points Sales

Iberia has Iberia Avios points redemption sales which let you use fewer Iberia Avios points for award flights.

2.   Lower Fuel Surcharges

Iberia charges lower fuel surcharges than British Airways.

For example, you could fly 1-way coach from New York to Madrid on December 6, 2014, and pay 20,000 Iberia Avios + ~$79.

You’ll Pay Less Fuel Surcharges Using Iberia Avios Points on a Flight From New York to Madrid

Whereas if you used British Airways Avios points to book a 1-way coach flight from New York to Madrid, you would pay 20,000 British Airways points + ~$273.

So using Iberia Avios points saves you ~$194 (~$273 fuel surcharge cost to use British Airways Avios points – ~$79 fuel surcharge cost to use Iberia Avios points).

  1. Whoa, thanks for the heads up! I was actually just looking for a way to activate my account. This looks easy enough. I was going through some weird partners of Iberia airlines to get those points, like signing up for Spanish classes. This seems more reliable. I have a bunch of Chase points I would like to convert to Iberia points!

  2. Dan's the Man

    Thanks Dan!

  3. I just did this yesterday, thanks for publicizing it more widely. Just out of curiosity, have you received the avios yet? Mine haven’t shown up yet…

  4. probably will take several weeks Heath…… I just got my miles from an AA promo game and it took several weeks. Probably not useful if you need them immediately.

  5. So what exactly is the half-life of these magical free 50 points?
    What’s Iberia’s expiration policy?

  6. Thank you, Daraius. Just completed thanks to you, for the Mrs. and for me. This is very helpful. Much obliged.

  7. Thanks Daraius!

  8. Is it just me? When I try to redeem avios with OneWorld, San Francisco is not available as origin. SJC is there but not OAK.
I have 0 avios on IB but plenty on BA. thanks for the free miles, maybe that will help.

  9. I can’t get the first quiz page to work. When I click on myShoes, it does register my answer. I even tried a different browser and signing in to my Iberia account ahead of time. Are others unable to proceed?

  10. .

  11. I tried it with both chrome and IE and it didn’t work (though I got further with IE), it only worked when I used firefox.
    Thank you for the tip

  12. I tried to enter my iberia plus number in the box for the 50points contest but nothing happens!

  13. I never had an Iberia account prior to today, and have failed to create one. It stumbles upon submission of the form, asking me to review my document number (and advising that if it’s correct, I should contact their support #). I specified that my document was “Passport” and included my U.S. passport #, which I verified more than once. Anyone else encounter this? Any idea why this thing seems to think a passport # (which it most likely can’t submit to the U.S. State Dept. for validation anyway) isn’t valid and won’t accept the form submission?

  14. Hasn
t been working for at least a week. It is non working post. ignore it. It has been 6 days and I still got no 50 avios

  15. If I transfer my British Airways AVIOS points to Iberia, wait a few months, and then transfer them back to BA will it reset the expiration timer for my BA points?

  16. I answered my own question. Apparently I did still have an Iberia Plus account after all, and so my passport number was already on file with that account. It would have been more helpful if they had pointed out that I already had an account, or made it possible to recover the card number and not just the PIN. For some reason I had never recorded my card number in my electronic repository and had to find the physical card (among MANY others) in my safe. But now I should have some Avios on their way to me, and a soon-to-be active account. Thanks Daraius!

  17. Game won’t work on Firefox and on IE I get to the first uestion but clicking on MyShoes doesn’t select it. Can’t play.

  19. I did this 2 weeks ago. Points still have not posted.

  20. The game will not accept my wife’s Iberia account number, even when I copy/paste it from her logged-in Iberia Avios page. Weird.

  21. The game would not work for me using Internet Explorer. But I switched to Chrome and it worked just fine.

    Thanks Daraius

  22. Tried for a week or so but the game didn’t work. Tried Chrome and it worked fine.

  23. Can’t get to contest on Chrome, IE or Firefox. Instead get some Interdomain Spanish page.
