You Can Save $200 When You Use Your American Express Card to Buy Your Cathay Pacific Ticket

American Express Offers

You can save money on everyday purchases with American Express Offers.  And you can combine them with other discounts and coupons for even bigger savings!

You can register almost all American Express cards except corporate cards, gift cards, and prepaid cards like Bluebird.

$200 AMEX Statement Credit

One of the latest American Express offers is a $200 American Express statement credit when you spend $2,000 or more on the Cathay Pacific website by July 31, 2014.

Did You Register Your AMEX to Save $200 on a Cathay Pacific Ticket?

You have to book your ticket through the specific Cathay Pacific website to get the $200 American Express statement credit.

Let’s say you and your partner wanted to spend Thanksgiving week, November 22, 2014, to November 30, 2014, in Hong Kong.

Two coach tickets on Cathay Pacific from Los Angeles to Hong Kong would cost ~$2,198. But if you registered and paid with your American Express card, 2 coach tickets would cost $1,998 ($2,198 for 2 coach tickets – $200 American Express statement credit).

Have Dim Sum for Thanksgiving and Save $200

If you’re already buying tickets to Asia, using your American Express to save $200 is worth it.  Because it’s worth saving cash instead of earning Chase Ultimate Rewards points, Citi ThankYou points, or Barclay Arrival points.

For example, if you used your Chase Sapphire Preferred you would get ~4,396 Chase Ultimate Rewards points (~$2,198 in airline tickets X 2 Chase Sapphire Preferred travel bonus).  You’d have ~$44 (if you redeem for cash back) or ~$66 in Ultimate Rewards points (~4,396 x 1.5 cents per Ultimate Rewards ).

So $200 cash is better than $66 in flights!

So it’s better to save cash than collect points with this promotion.  But be sure to check prices on Priceline.com, Orbitz, and Kayak to make sure you’re paying the lowest price.

  1. @Daraius, if you use an American Express credit cards, will they charge forex fees for buying on Cathay Pacific’s website?

  2. I was just gearing up to write my post on this very same offer and both of my Amex cards are not showing the offer anymore.

I double checked yesterday and it was still there, but somehow vanished overnight.

Did anyone else have their Cathay offers disappear?!

  3. The quota has been met for this offer. I got this for one of my AmEx cards:

“Sorry, max # of Card Members have enrolled in #AmexMERCHANT123 offer. Visit amex.co/faves for more offers”

  4. When I asked what the #AmExMerchant123 offer is, I got this:

Good morning. It is the same as the #AmexCathay offer. Thanks for tweeting and have a nice day. ^Courtney

  5. If I book a ticket on Cathay than cancel it will amex also take back the $200??
