I’ve been slacking with our trip report to India and Thailand in December, so here’s a quick video of Emily in Lufthansa’s new First Class cabin on a Boeing 747 from Frankfurt to Mumbai.

I wasn’t expecting the new Lufthansa First Class cabin, with a separate bed, on our flight, but recognized it instantly as we made our way to our seat.  Emily exclaimed “Oh Wow!” as she saw her own bed, which is the highest level of praise from her and which I love hearing her say.  And which totally makes scrounging for those miles and points worthwhile!

As you can tell, your blogger clearly needs to improve his video skills.  The bad news is that Lufthansa is no longer releasing First Class award seats until a few weeks before departure, which makes it hard to redeem miles for a Lufthansa flight.

You can book a 1 way ticket from the US to Europe on Lufthansa in First Class for 62,500 67,500 United miles or a round trip for 125,000 United or US Air miles (US Air doesn’t allow 1 way awards at half the round trip rate).

Hope you enjoyed the video!

  1. Not bad for am amateur video. This is just not fair if Lufthansa does not release first class award seats until the last moment.

  2. It’s a good start.

  3. Is the one-way miles amount for first class to Europe correct?

  4. Lucky guy. Just a few Q’s from a noob: You mention it cost 62.5K/125K miles from the US to Europe…but what’s the cost from there to Mumbai? Or was Frankfurt just a layover? I’m looking to start accumulating miles for a 2013 trip to India (LAX-DEL). Should I aim for Star Alliance or Oneworld miles? And what would this trip cost for coach? Thanks in advance for the help.

  5. UA F TATL is 67,500 OW, 135K RT

  6. A+ for Emily’s correct pronunciation of “Porsche”

    • @Shami @Dave Op – Thanks!

@bluto @msp2anywhere – You’re right. I’ve fixed the typo to 67.5K. Thanks for letting me know.

      – We spent 160,000 US Air miles per person for a round trip from the US. Frankfurt was the layover en route to India. We flew on United to Frankfurt and then Lufthansa to India. Based on current prices, it would cost 80K in coach using United or US Air miles or 90K using American Airline miles. If you’re flying in coach, you’ll still have to pay fuel surcharges on British Airways flights from London to Delhi or from the US to London (if using American Airlines miles, but there are a few other options as well). I’ve usually had luck booking trips on both alliances to India 10 to 11 months out.

      @James – 🙂

  7. very nice

  8. Emily sounds exactly how I thought she would…a sweetheart! Nice clip D!

  9. What type of Porsche Kit was that? It sounded like she said “Men Kit”
Of course, as soon as you write it, it will make perfect sense.
BTW, how long were each of the flights? I’d hate to do that in Coach – You scored big time in First class!

  10. Thanks for the video… you shouldn’t be so hard on yourself… it was very good!

  11. Love this! My wife and I will soon be on this bird on the way to Sweden this spring! Can not wait!

  12. @ James – Thank you!

@ Corinne- You are so sweet! I’m glad you enjoyed the video.

@ BillyBob- It’s a Porsche Amenity Kit (not Men’s Kit). However, they did have different versions for men and women. I think the flight was around 9 hours. Sleeping on those little beds gave me the best sleep I’ve ever had on a flight. I hope you get to experience it, too!

@ rene- Lucky you! Your wife is going to love it!!

  13. interesting

  14. Emily – enjoyed your video
    – we are going 1st class on 7/28 LH 415 IAD TO MUC
on 8/7 LH 434 MUC to ORD

    – can U tell me : are we on the same plane type as in your video ? If not, what webpage / how do we see the aircraft type for our flights ?
-there are several similar videos around Any help appreciated .

  15. Very cool! For a few seconds at first I misunderstood and thought you two had to share that single bed. haha

    • @bwiflyer – Glad you liked it!

      @Corinne – She IS a sweetie. And she’s mine!

      – It was an “Amenity” kit with the usual socks, chapstick, hand cream etc. The flight was only ~ 8 hours, and I’ve done many of those flights in coach, but it was nice to be in First Class!

@Darren – Thanks! I don’t like the shadows in the video because it made it hard to see.

@rene – Waiting for your trip report!

@Wagger – Here is more information on which planes have the new First Class cabin.

      – It was! There were 4 other folks in the cabin, so we couldn’t share the bed.

  16. D:

Have you personally tried to pay your income tax with a credit card? I just want verification that it is not treated as a cash advance.

Did you guys do train travel in India? That would have been an enjoyable experience.

    – Porcupyn

    • Porcupyn – I haven’t personally paid tax with a credit card, but I don’t expect it to be treated like a cash advance. Emily and I took the train to and from Pune, and I’ve been on Indian Railways many times before.
