This is great news for folks who book award flights on Star Alliance partner airlines, like Lufthansa or United Airlines!
And when you transfer Starwood points to Avianca, you’ll receive 5,000 bonus miles for every 20,000 points you transfer!
This is also terrific news because it shows the Starwood loyalty program is still operating independently following the closing of the merger with Marriott.

Avianca is the newest Starwood airline transfer partner. You can use Avianca miles to book award flights on Star Alliance partner airlines like Air Canada, Lufthansa, and United Airlines.
For example, I recently wrote about available Business Class award seats on United Airlines award flights to New Zealand. You could pay 81,000 Avianca miles for this award flight one-way.
You can use Avianca miles to:
- Book one-way award tickets
- Get lower-priced redemptions compared to other Star Alliance airlines
- Book award tickets online
Avianca does NOT add fuel surcharges to award flights on their partner airlines! Those can add hundreds of dollars to an award ticket!
35,000 Avianca miles is enough for a round-trip coach award flight from the US (excluding Hawaii) and Canada to anywhere in the Caribbean, Mexico, US, Canada, and Alaska.And with 40,000 Avianca miles, you can fly round-trip in coach to places like Cuzco, Bogota, and Quito. So transferring your Starwood points to Avianca can be a good deal!
Remember, Starwood transfers are NOT instant. Transfer times vary and it can take up to 4 weeks for your miles to appear in your account. But in my experience, transfers take can take 2 to 12 days to complete.
