The Marriott-Starwood merger is still chugging right along. While it’s mostly done, one holdover benefit from the old Starwood program is Suite Night Awards. You can already book some of these award upgrades directly in the Marriott app!
Not every hotel, brand, or reservation has the capability yet. But it’s good news for folks with Marriott Platinum elite status (or higher!). It’s one less step – and accessing your rewards with a few clicks is faster and more customer-friendly.
Plus, these upgrades can be extremely valuable!
If you need to stock up on Marriott points, take a look at our guide to all the ways you can earn them!
I’ll share what we know so far!
It’s (Getting) Easier for Marriott Elites to Use Their Suite Upgrades
If you stay at Marriott hotels enough, you’ll earn perks as part of your elite status. One of the best is a Choice Benefit when you hit 50 nights in a year, and another at the 75-night mark.
That’s a lot of time spent in hotels, so it’s nice to choose a reward. The best is perhaps 5 Suite Night Awards, which let you confirm an upgrade to a suite (or better room) up to 5 nights ahead of your stay.
This benefit alone can be worth $1,000s if you use them all!
To see if you can upgrade your reservation, you must have chosen Suite Night Awards as your Choice Benefit. Then in the “Info” tab of the Marriott app, you’ll see higher-category rooms you can select as possible upgrades.
The more you select, the better your chances. Not all the options are suites, but they are all above standard room categories.
What’s lacking is not all hotels, brands, or reservations have this option available – yet. But some elite members can already choose upgrades directly within the app.
It seems to be based on individual hotels and reservation confirmation dates more than anything else. So hopefully this will roll out across the whole Marriott program soon. I love positive changes like this!
Of course, if you can’t upgrade your room with the app, you can always call Marriott customer service. If you have elite status, you get a dedicated reservation line, so your call should be fast and easy. It’s worth a shot, especially if you have a special occasion, like a holiday, celebration, or anniversary.
