American Airlines is in the process of adding the ability to book award tickets with 4 more partners online.  That means it will, in theory, be easier to use your American Airlines miles!

But anytime something becomes easier more folks will take advantage of it.

American Airlines Partner Cathay Pacific Offers a Wonderful Business Class With Destinations All Over Asia!

American Airlines is in the process of updating their website to allow folks to search for award flights with partners:

  • Cathay Pacific
  • Qatar
  • SriLankan
  • Malaysia Airlines

Earlier today you could find a limited number of these partner awards online, like this flight to Hong Kong that had only one leg on Cathay Pacific.

You Can’t Find These Awards Online Anymore, But They’ll Be Making a Return Soon!

But they have been removed from the American Airlines site.  View From the Wing has confirmed with American Airlines that they are in the process of making these partner awards searchable on the American Airlines website.  We don’t know when, but at some point in the future they will come back.

This will make it much easier to book awards with these partners.  In the past, you had to call American Airlines (NOT the partner airline) to book awards on partner airlines such as Cathay Pacific.  Or, for example, look for Cathay Pacific award seats online at BritishAirways.com then call American Airlines to book.

With this change, it’ll definitely be less of a hassle to book these tickets.  But it will mean more competition for partner award seats.  So you’ll likely see them disappear much more quickly than in the past.

What’s your take on this news?  Do you think making it easier to book partner award tickets online will cause a flood of award bookings?

They will still be years behind United and Delta in this regard. Where is LATAM? JAL? United has had almost all its alliance partners searchable – and there are many more – for quite a few years now.

Most of the foreign carriers do a reasonable job of making seats available (unlike AA in the not too distant past), so the time saved in doing searches and making phone calls is more important to me than worries about incremental change in competition for seats. AA has advanced into the early 2000s now in its award seat search technology.

All good points, there were some reports of LATAM showing up in the search results during the brief window, so they could be on the list to be added as well, but others like Japan Airlines and Air Tahiti Nui probably won’t be.
