Every so often Chase will spring a great bonus onto us for transferring points to its valuable transfer partners. There currently happens to be one of the best I’ve ever seen — a 30% bonus when transferring to:

  • British Airways
  • Iberia
  • Aer Lingus

Chase points are easy to earn with many of the best Chase credit cards. And all three of these airline transfer partners can be strategically leveraged depending on where you want to go. They’re seriously amazing! Let’s take a quick look.

Chase 30% bonus when converting to “Avios” points

British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus are all owned by the same entity. They all collect the same kind of points, called Avios. So if you’ve got 2,000 British Airways Avios, you can convert them into Iberia Avios no problem. Currently, when you transfer Chase points in increments of 1,000 to any of these airlines, you’ll receive 1,300 Avios. For example, if you’ve got 15,000 Chase points, you can transfer them to British Airways and receive 19,500 Avios.

We don’t have an end date on this deal, so if you’re interested in the bonus, transfer soon.

Why convert Chase points into Avios?

The reason Avios points are so useful is that you can book flights on partner airlines in the Oneworld airline alliance, including American Airlines. And it’s often a better deal than actually using American Airlines miles! Here are the best uses of these points:

  • British Airways Avios points: Best for short-haul flights. You’ll pay just 7,500 Avios for nonstop one-way flights up to 1,151 miles long on American Airlines — and as little as 4,500 Avios for international one-way flights up to 650 miles long. Read here about how to use British Airways Avios on American Airlines.
  • Iberia Avios: Best for cheap business class to Madrid from select U.S. cities — as little as 34,000 miles one-way from cities like Chicago, Boston, and New York. Also great for domestic round-trip coach flights, which start at 11,000 miles in total. Read about how I booked these prices here.
  • Aer Lingus Avios: Best for flights to Ireland from select U.S. cities — as little as 13,000 Avios each way from cities like Chicago, New York Washington D.C., etc. Read exactly how to do this in our Ireland award sweet spot post. You’d need to transfer 10,000 Chase points to Aer Lingus for that redemption!

Iberia is by far my favorite of the above three airlines. I’ve saved literally thousands of dollars in just the past couple years. I booked $450 American Airlines flights to Thanksgiving for a total of 17,000 Iberia Avios. I booked two transatlantic lie-flat business class seats worth thousands of dollars for just 68,000 Iberia Avios. With this 30% transfer bonus I’d only need to move 53,000 Chase points to Iberia for the same business class flights.

These cards all have fantastic bonuses and solid earning rates. And if you wait to transfer your points when great deals like this pop up, your points can take you even farther. Plus, if you have one of the above cards, you unlock the ability to also transfer the Chase points you earn with the following cards to Chase travel partners like Iberia and British Airways:

  • Chase Freedom Flex℠
  • Chase Freedom Unlimited®
  • Ink Business Cash Credit Card
  • Ink Business Unlimited Credit Card

A combination of a few of these cards in your wallet makes you an absolute points-earning machine. Read our post on the Chase Trifecta to quickly develop a foolproof strategy for efficiently collecting Chase points.

Bottom line

This transfer bonus is a great deal if you plan on flying anytime soon, or have a specific use of Avios in mind. However, we usually don’t recommend speculatively transfering your points unless you have a redemption in mind. It’s better to keep them flexible until you know how you’re going to use them.
