Through September 18, 2018 (~1 more week!), Avianca is offering a bonus on miles purchased directly from them:

• 100% bonus miles when you buy 1,000 to 50,000 Avianca miles
• 115% bonus miles when you buy 51,000 to 100,000 Avianca miles
• 125% bonus miles when you buy 101,000 to 200,000 Avianca miles

Avianca is part of the Star Alliance, so you can book award flights on partner airlines like Air New Zealand, SWISS, and United Airlines via their mileage program.

And their award chart has sweet spots like 63,000 Avianca miles to Europe in Business Class.  Or flights within the US on United Airlines for 7,500 or 10,000 Avianca miles, depending on your “zones” (the US award chart is certainly quirky).

You’ll earn at least 100% bonus miles no matter how many miles you buy.  But to get the most (125%), you’ll need to purchase at least 101,000 Avianca miles.  You’ll pay $3,333, but wind up with over a quarter of a million miles!  That works out to 1.47 cents per mile with the 125% bonus ($3,333 / 227,250).

Considering you can get a value of 2+ cents per mile when you redeem them, it’s possible to come out far ahead with this promotion.  A few thousand bucks is a hefty sum, so I only recommend jumping on this deal if you have a valuable award in mind.

You must purchase in 1,000-mile increments.  And the maximum you can buy with this deal is 200,000 Avianca miles (and you’d end up with 450,000 Avianca miles!).  Also, you can only purchase 480,000 Avianca miles (including bonuses) per calendar year with Avianca’s program.
