Update: Credit card offers in this post may no longer be available, but check the Hot Deals for the latest offers!

Barclaycard has just increased the sign-up bonus on the Lufthansa card to 50,000 miles after spending $5,000 within 3 months.  You get 20,000 miles after your 1st purchase, and the remaining 30,000 miles after spending $5,000 within 3 months.  This offer ends on June 30, 2014.

I haven’t written much lately about the Barclaycard Miles & More World Elite MasterCard because the sign-up bonus was only 20,000 miles.  That’s not even enough for a round-trip coach ticket in the US on United Airlines (1 of Lufthansa’s Star Alliance partners).

But the new bonus is more than double the usual offer!

What’s the Barclaycard Lufthansa Card?

Link:   Barclaycard Miles & More World Elite MasterCard

Lufthansa is a German airline & a member of the Star Alliance.  This means that you can redeem Lufthansa miles for flights on other Star Alliance airlines, including United in the US.

Lufthansa’s frequent flyer program, Miles & More, is also the frequent flyer program for 12 other European airlines, including Austrian Airlines, Swiss, Brussels Airlines, and LOT Polish Airlines.  But you can redeem Miles & More miles with any Star Alliance airline, including United Airlines.

With this card, you’ll get:

  • 50,000 miles after spending $5,000 within 3 months
  • 2 miles per $1 you spend on any Miles & More airline
  • 1 mile per $1 you spend on all other purchases
  • No foreign currency fees
  • $79 annual fee, NOT waived for the 1st year

But before you apply, carefully consider if there are any other Barclaycards you want to apply for.  Barclaycard has gotten very strict and now you can only get 1 or 2 Barclaycards a year.

Lufthansa is a member of the Star Alliance, so their miles can be used on any Star Alliance airline, including United Airlines, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, and Thai.

Which Star Alliance Airline Will You Choose?

You can view their award chart to see where you can go.  For example, ~50,000 Lufthansa miles will get you:

  • 2 domestic United Airlines coach round-trip tickets (25,000 miles each or 24,000 miles if booked as 2 separate 1-way awards)
  • 1 United Airlines coach saver award round-trip ticket from North America to Hawaii (40,000 miles)
  • 1.5 domestic United Airlines First Class round-trip tickets (35,000 miles)

You could use 50,000 Lufthansa miles to get 2 low-level domestic coach award tickets on United.  You won’t pay fuel surcharges on domestic United Airlines flights, but you will on most other Star Alliance award tickets.  But there are ways to avoid paying high fuel surcharges!

Or you could save your sign-up bonus and keep earning Lufthansa miles until you have enough for an award ticket in First Class.  Emily and I flew from Frankfurt to Mumbai in Lufthansa First Class and it was an amazing experience.  You get a seat and a bed!

You can read my series on all the ways to use Lufthansa miles.  But remember, you WILL pay high fuel surcharges on most award ticket redemptions.  So check out this post on how to use Lufthansa miles without paying high fuel surcharges.

Bottom Line

The Barclaycard Miles & More World Elite MasterCard card sign-up bonus has increased to 50,000 miles after completing the minimum spending.  Previously, the bonus was only 20,000 points.

But don’t rush out to get this card until you consider which other Barclaycards you may want to apply for, because you can only get 1 or 2 Barclaycards per year.  For many folks, the Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® could be the better deal!

Are you going to take advantage of this deal?  Where will you go with your Lufthansa miles?

After applying for the Lufthansa card I was approved for the Platinum card and only offered 20k miles. I thought the offer available through your referral link included the 50k bonus even for those approved for the lower Platinum card.

Am I missing something? Do you have a copy of the terms?

“So even if you’re approved for the lower Platinum (instead of World MasterCard) you WILL get the full 50,000 mile sign-up bonus after meeting the minimum spending requirements.”

Million Mile Secrets

@Losonn – That’s how the terms were in the application page. Call to confirm the full bonus after completing the spending requirements.

Lufthansa Lover

I really want to take advantage of this offer but want your advice Darius before I apply. When I fly, I always use Star Alliance and 99% of the time I fly Lufthansa so this card makes a lot of sense for me. I currently have a Miles and More World Card (since 2008) and have reaped great benefits from it. But I want the Premier card because I would get 2 miles per $1 (instead of my current 1 mile for $1) on Star Alliance flights. I am in great standing with Barclay (always pay full amount and in time) but applied for the Arrival Card last November. I should also mention I got a IHG Chase card this February. Both cards were instantly approved and my credit is 750+. I have two concerns related to this new potential card, as I mentioned, 1) I already applied, and was approved, for 2 cards between November and February. One was the Barclay Arrival card. 2) I won’t get the bonus points because I already have the World version of the card. The current Lufthansa Barclay card terms state that rewards are only for “new card members only” so I am wondering if the only benefit I receive will be the 2 points per $1 spent and not the bonus points. Have you Darius, or others, managed to get award points anyway in scenarios like this? Do you have any suggestions about how to improve my chances of getting the points? For example, should I not enter my Miles and More number during the time of application and then add it to the account later, once I’m approved? I don’t want to lower my credit score with a hard pull if you think the chances of me getting the Premiere card are too low considering my new cards but it has been 3 months since my last card was approved. I think I remember reading before that 3 months between application periods is sufficient What do you think about all of the above? Thanks for your help and all the great info you post. I’ve saved hundreds of $ from your tips and advice on this site 🙂

Million Mile Secrets

@Lufthansa Lover – If you already have the card, it could be hard to get approved for another version.

Can I transfer the miles I receive “to” Star Alliance partners?

Million Mile Secrets

@NYChic – You can’t transfer them directly to other Star Alliance airlines. But you can redeem them for flights on other Star Alliance airlines!

Is there a Business card version to this Lufthansa offer?

Million Mile Secrets

@Joe – Unfortunately, there isn’t a business card version

Thanks so much! I have been seeing this around but the link you included to your post on Lufthansa Fuel Surcharges makes all the difference. Keep up the good work!

@StacyShine – Glad you found it useful!
