Barclaycard has just increased the sign-up bonus on the Lufthansa card to 50,000 miles after spending $5,000 within 3 months. You get 20,000 miles after your 1st purchase, and the remaining 30,000 miles after spending $5,000 within 3 months. This offer ends on June 30, 2014.
I haven’t written much lately about the Barclaycard Miles & More World Elite MasterCard because the sign-up bonus was only 20,000 miles. That’s not even enough for a round-trip coach ticket in the US on United Airlines (1 of Lufthansa’s Star Alliance partners).
But the new bonus is more than double the usual offer!
What’s the Barclaycard Lufthansa Card?
Link: Barclaycard Miles & More World Elite MasterCardLufthansa is a German airline & a member of the Star Alliance. This means that you can redeem Lufthansa miles for flights on other Star Alliance airlines, including United in the US.
Lufthansa’s frequent flyer program, Miles & More, is also the frequent flyer program for 12 other European airlines, including Austrian Airlines, Swiss, Brussels Airlines, and LOT Polish Airlines. But you can redeem Miles & More miles with any Star Alliance airline, including United Airlines.
With this card, you’ll get:
- 50,000 miles after spending $5,000 within 3 months
- 2 miles per $1 you spend on any Miles & More airline
- 1 mile per $1 you spend on all other purchases
- No foreign currency fees
- $79 annual fee, NOT waived for the 1st year
But before you apply, carefully consider if there are any other Barclaycards you want to apply for. Barclaycard has gotten very strict and now you can only get 1 or 2 Barclaycards a year.
What Can You Do With Lufthansa Miles?
Lufthansa is a member of the Star Alliance, so their miles can be used on any Star Alliance airline, including United Airlines, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, and Thai.
You can view their award chart to see where you can go. For example, ~50,000 Lufthansa miles will get you:
- 2 domestic United Airlines coach round-trip tickets (25,000 miles each or 24,000 miles if booked as 2 separate 1-way awards)
- 1 United Airlines coach saver award round-trip ticket from North America to Hawaii (40,000 miles)
- 1.5 domestic United Airlines First Class round-trip tickets (35,000 miles)
You could use 50,000 Lufthansa miles to get 2 low-level domestic coach award tickets on United. You won’t pay fuel surcharges on domestic United Airlines flights, but you will on most other Star Alliance award tickets. But there are ways to avoid paying high fuel surcharges!
Or you could save your sign-up bonus and keep earning Lufthansa miles until you have enough for an award ticket in First Class. Emily and I flew from Frankfurt to Mumbai in Lufthansa First Class and it was an amazing experience. You get a seat and a bed!
You can read my series on all the ways to use Lufthansa miles. But remember, you WILL pay high fuel surcharges on most award ticket redemptions. So check out this post on how to use Lufthansa miles without paying high fuel surcharges.
The Barclaycard Miles & More World Elite MasterCard card sign-up bonus has increased to 50,000 miles after completing the minimum spending. Previously, the bonus was only 20,000 points.
But don’t rush out to get this card until you consider which other Barclaycards you may want to apply for, because you can only get 1 or 2 Barclaycards per year. For many folks, the Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® could be the better deal!
Are you going to take advantage of this deal? Where will you go with your Lufthansa miles?
