Because the Chase Sapphire Reserve does NOT charge international fees, it’s a great card to use when you’re traveling outside of the US. Using other cards that charge a 1% to 3% fee may not seem like a lot, but it can add up!
Plus, you’ll earn 3X Chase Ultimate Rewards points on travel & dining, even when you’re overseas. And you are almost certainly spending lots of money on travel and dining when you’re on vacation! Trying delicious new food is one of the reasons I love to travel. 😉
Do NOT Pay in US Dollars!
Usually the cashier will ask you, or the credit card reader will prompt you, to select your bill in either the local currency (like euros) or US dollars.
If you choose US dollars instead of the foreign currency, you’ll pay extra, in addition to the exchange rate and the foreign transaction fee charged by the bank.
Seeing a foreign transaction in your US dollars might seem simpler, but it will cost you 3% or more for the convenience. Even if you’re using a card no foreign transaction fees.
Read my post about why you should always pay for foreign purchases in the local currency and not US dollars.
Here’s more about how to easily find credit card currency conversion rates with an app. And which cards give the best exchange rate on foreign transactions.
Other Credit Cards Without Foreign Transaction Fees
Many American Express cards don’t charge foreign transaction fees, like the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express, Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express and Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express cards, or any of the AMEX Delta cards.
Along with the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Ink Plus (no longer available), and Chase Hyatt, do not charge a foreign transaction fee either.
And you won’t be charged extra fees when using the Citi Prestige card abroad.
But always compare the benefits you’ll get from each card, like extra points in bonus categories!
Bottom Line – Chase Sapphire Reserve Foreign Transaction Fees
When traveling overseas, it’s important to choose a card with no foreign transaction fees.
The Chase Sapphire Reserve card is a great option to use when you’re outside of the US, because it does NOT charge international fees. And you’ll earn 3X Chase Ultimate Rewards points on travel & dining purchases…anywhere in the world!
