I’ve always dreamed of being one of those thrifty shoppers you hear about – the kind of mom that spends $100 a month to feed her family. But I’ve resigned to the fact that that’s just not me.
I like everything in moderation (okay maybe I’m on the extreme end when it comes to miles & points!). But I try to make savings easy and mindless. That’s why I’m considering the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express.
With my monthly grocery budget of $500, I could earn $360 per year in cash back just for swiping the right card. I’ll explain.

Grocery bills are one of the biggest expenses for many folks, especially families. And if you’re looking for a way to earn cash back on this unavoidable expense, you should consider the AMEX Blue Cash Preferred.
Why? Because it offers 6% cash back at US supermarkets on up to $6,000 in purchases per calendar year (then 1%). I actually spend just about $6,000 a year on groceries ($500 per month), which is an easy $360 back in my pocket. And that doesn’t even account for the card’s other bonus spending categories!
With the AMEX Blue Cash Preferred, you can earn a $200 statement credit after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.
According to the USDA’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, the average cost of food to feed a family of 4 easily tops $800 per month. That’s a total of $9,600 per year.
Using these stats, the average family would earn at least $396 in cash back using the AMEX Blue Cash Preferred. You’d get $360 in cash back for the first $6,000 in spending at US supermarkets, and another $36 for earning 1% cash back on the remaining $3,600 in spend at US supermarkets.
How to Earn Cash Back With the AMEX Blue Cash Preferred
It’s easy to earn cash back with the AMEX Blue Cash Preferred. You can earn cash back in 3 ways:
- 6% cash back at US supermarkets (up to $6,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1% cash back)
- 3% cash back at US gas stations and select US department stores
- 1% cash back on everything else
At those rates, you’d only need to spend ~$132 a month on groceries to have the $95 annual fee “pay for itself” (~$132 X 12 months X 6%)! So it’s easy to understand why this so many could benefit from having this card in their wallet. (See Rates & Fees)
