This is great news for folks with AMEX Membership Rewards points, Chase Ultimate Rewards points, Citi ThankYou points, and Starwood points.  Because you can move your points (directly or indirectly) from these 4 transferable points programs to Etihad.

And there are many ways to use Etihad miles, like booking award flights on American Airlines or on any of Etihads’ 26 airline partners.

Through October 30, 2016, you’ll get a 20% bonus when you transfer points to Etihad.  Including flexible points and partner hotel points!

There are several options for converting points to Etihad miles.  But the best options are AMEX Membership Rewards points, Citi ThankYou points, and Starwood points.  Because these points transfer to Etihad at a 1:1 ratio.

If you have a lot of Chase Ultimate Rewards points, you could consider transferring points to Starwood via Marriott at a 3:1 ratio.  Then, transfer Starwood points to Etihad.

You can use Etihad miles to book award seats on any of its 26 airline partners.

Etihad has different award charts for each airline partner.  And depending on the partner, you can find excellent deals!

For example, you can book a round-trip Brussels Airlines flight from New York (JFK) to Brussels for:

  • 21,972 Etihad miles in coach
  • 36,620 Etihad miles in Business Class

For comparison, a round-trip award flight to Brussels on United Airlines costs:

  • 60,000 United Airlines miles in coach
  • 115,000 United Airlines miles in Business Class

So using Etihad miles is a terrific deal because you’ll save lots of miles!

American Airlines Award Flights

You can also use Etihad miles to book American Airlines award flights.

And Etihad doesn’t use the new American Airlines award chart.  So you can book certain award flights for fewer miles.

Here are some examples:

One-Way Within the Continental US in First Class:
  • 50,000 American Airlines miles, or
  • 32,500 Etihad miles
One-Way From the US to Australia in Coach:
  • 40,000 American Airlines miles, or
  • 37,500 Etihad miles
One-Way From the US to Europe in First Class
  • 85,000 American Airlines miles, or
  • 62,500 Etihad miles

To book award flights using Etihad miles, you’ll need to call Etihad at 877-690-0767.

Earn Etihad Miles With Transferable Points Programs

Here are cards to earn points with all 4 transferable programs:

1.   American Express Membership Rewards

You can earn AMEX Membership Rewards points with these cards:

2.   Chase Ultimate Rewards Points

You’ll earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points with these cards:

Remember, you cannot directly transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Etihad.  But you can transfer points to Starwood via Marriott at a 3:1 ratio.  Then, transfer Starwood points to Etihad.

And to transfer points to travel partners, you must have the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred, Ink Plus, or Ink Bold (no longer available) card.

3.   Citi ThankYou Points

You can earn Citi ThankYou points with the Citi Prestige Card or Citi ThankYou Premier Card.  It can take a few days for points to transfer from your Citi ThankYou account to Etihad.

4.   Starwood Points

You’ll earn Starwood points with the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express.

You also get a 5,000 mile bonus for every transfer of 20,000 Starwood points!  With the current 20% bonus, this means you’ll get 29,000 Etihad miles when you transfer 20,000 Starwood points!

Remember, Starwood points can take up to 4 weeks to transfer.  But in my experience it usually takes 2 to 12 days.
