Via Frequent Miler, the AMEX OPEN Savings program will end on June 1, 2018.
AMEX OPEN Savings is a program that earned many AMEX small business cards bonus cash back or AMEX Membership Rewards points for shopping at certain merchants. I’m sad to see this go, but it’s not enough to make me cancel the AMEX small business cards I currently have.
Here’s what you need to know!

One of the great benefits of American Express small business cards is the AMEX OPEN Savings program.
You can choose to earn either 5% back or 2 AMEX Membership Rewards points per $1 you spend with participating merchants, like Barnes & Noble, FedEx, Hertz, and HP. There’s no registration required, you receive your bonus rewards when you use your eligible AMEX small business card at one of the AMEX OPEN merchants.
But on June 1, 2018, American Express will kill the program. This likely won’t affect most of you too much. But for small business owners that spend lots of money at participating stores, this could be a big deal!
Eligible cards are:
- The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN
- The Business Platinum® Card from American Express
- The Blue Business®️ Plus Credit Card from American Express
- The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card
- Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express
- Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express
- Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express
So if you have any of these cards, take advantage of the AMEX OPEN savings program as much as you can in the next ~3 months!
Bottom Line
American Express is ending the AMEX OPEN Savings program on June 1, 2018. So you’ll no longer earn 5% back or 2 AMEX Membership Rewards points per $1 at select merchants.
Is this devaluation enough to make you rethink which AMEX cards stay in your wallet?
