    Scott:   I was shocked and saddened to learn of Anthony Bourdain’s unexpected death today at age 61.  Reports indicate suicide.

    You may know him from one of his TV shows such as “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.”  I admired his spirited travels around the world.  He taught us and inspired us as he connected on a deeper level with local chefs, when he uncovered hidden gems, and he showed us how to better appreciate great food and drink through his edgy and fun style of storytelling.

    Wherever I go, I like to look up one of his recommended restaurants.  I have been lucky enough to experience a few and the one most memorable was Cervejeria Ramiro Restaurant in Lisbon.  Thanks to his tip I had an amazing experience with my travel partner from the incredible fresh seafood to the service.  It was one of the highlights of our trip.

    What I found really cool about Anthony Bourdain was how he was just as excited and comfortable with tasty and unique street food from a cart as he was with 5-star fine dining.  One of his shows sent me to Ganesh Temple Canteen,  a cafeteria in the basement of a temple in Queens, New York, to lick my fingers with delight from authentic recipes from southern India.

    He sent me to lots of far away places.  But more importantly, he brought me closer to my family and loved ones through food and travel — two powerful parts of the human experience.

    Using miles and points I was able to travel to a few of the places he highlighted.  So at this moment I’m feeling very thankful for our hobby and for all that Mr. Bourdain shared with us.
