We are an independent publisher. Our reporters create honest, accurate, and objective content to help you make decisions. To support our work, we are paid for providing advertising services. Many, but not all, of the offers and clickable hyperlinks (such as a “Next” button) that appear on this site are from companies that compensate us. The compensation we receive and other factors, such as your location, may impact what ads and links appear on our site, and how, where, and in what order ads and links appear. While we strive to provide a wide range of offers, our site does not include information about every product or service that may be available to you. We strive to keep our information accurate and up-to-date, but some information may not be current. So, your actual offer terms from an advertiser may be different than the offer terms on this site. And the advertised offers may be subject to additional terms and conditions of the advertiser. All information is presented without any warranty or guarantee to you.

This page may include: credit card ads that we may be paid for (“advertiser listing”); and general information about credit card products (“editorial content”). Many, but not all, of the offers and clickable hyperlinks (such as a “Apply Now” button or “Learn More” button) that appear on this site are from companies that compensate us. When you click on that hyperlink or button, you may be directed to the credit card issuer’s website where you can review the terms and conditions for your selected offer. Each advertiser is responsible for the accuracy and availability of its ad offer details, but we attempt to verify those offer details. We have partnerships with advertisers such as Brex, Capital One, Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo and Discover. We also include editorial content to educate consumers about financial products and services. Some of that content may also contain ads, including links to advertisers’ sites, and we may be paid on those ads or links.

Good News & Bad News for Discover it Card

Signing up for credit cards through partner links earns us a commission. Terms apply to the offers listed on this page. Here’s our full advertising policy: How we make money.

Update: One or more card offers in this post are no longer available. Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.

First the bad news.  Earlier this month I told you how you can get double cash back with the Discover it card at the end of your 1st card year.

But now, according to folks on Reddit, current cardholders are no longer eligible to sign-up for this perk.  And the landing page says the double cash back is for “New Cardholders Only.”

Time Has Run Out for Current Discover it Cardholders to Have Their Cash Back Doubled!

But this offer is still available for new Discover it Cash Back cardholders.

And here’s the good news.  It seems you can now add a PIN to your card so you can use it more places overseas!

Emily and I don’t receive a commission for this card but we’ll always tell you about the best deals!

What’s the Deal?

Link:   Discover it Cash Back Card

When you sign-up for the Discover it Cash Back card you’ll earn $50 after your 1st purchase within the 1st 3 months of opening your account.

And you’ll earn 5% cash back in rotating categories (on up to $1,500 in spending) each quarter.  Plus, there’s a new benefit where the cash back you earn will automatically be doubled at the end of your 1st 12 billing cycles.

So You Can Effectively Earn 10% Cash Back for Making Purchases in Select Categories With Your Discover it Cash Back Card

Is This Deal Over for Current Card Holders?

Current Discover it Cash Back cardholders were able to get this new benefit added to their account by calling Discover at 800-347-3085.

But now customer service is telling folks the double cash back deal is only open to new cardholders.

However, if you’ve already enrolled in the offer, Discover should honor the deal.  I called Discover and they confirmed that existing Discover it Cash Back cardholders who already registered for deal will still earn double cash back.

It’s Too Late to Enroll If You’re an Existing Cardholder – but If You Already Registered or Are a New Cardholder, You’ll Earn Double Cash Back

This promotion is similar to the double miles back after 12 billing cycles you get with the Discover it Miles card.  With this card you get 1.5 miles per $1 spent, then after your 1st 12 billing cycles, your miles are doubled.  So it’s effectively 3 miles per dollar for your 1st year with the card.

You can redeem your miles for statement credits toward travel expenses, or have cash back deposited to your bank account.

Great News for Folks Who Travel Abroad Often!

I also asked if there was a Chip & PIN version of the Discover it Cash Back card.  And there is!  You can set your PIN over the phone.

This makes it a good card to use overseas.  That’s because Chip & PIN is required in some places in Europe, like vending machines that sell everything from train tickets to food.  Plus, the Discover it Cash Back card has NO foreign transaction fees!

Although, Discover isn’t accepted in nearly as many places as Visa and MasterCard, so make sure you bring another card too!

Bottom Line

The Discover it Cash Back card offers to double the cash back you earn at the end of your 1st 12 billing cycles.  But this deal is now only available to new cardholders.

That said, existing cardholders who already registered for deal will still earn double cash back.

And you can call Discover to request the Chip version of the card and ask to set a PIN.  This makes it easier to use when you’re traveling outside the US!

Emily and I don’t receive a commission for the Discover it Cash Back card, but we’ll always tell you about the best offers!
