I recently let you know that the Chase Ink Plus card will no longer be open to new applicants later this year. So if you’re interested in earning 5X bonus Chase Ultimate Rewards points in categories like office supplies and cell phone bills, now is the time to apply!
And although the Ink Plus card is going away, View From the Wing has confirmed that the no-annual fee Chase Ink Business Cash Credit Card, that earns 5% cash back at office supply stores, is here to stay.
Here’s what this means for you.
Apply for the Chase Ink Plus Card While You Still Can

Once the new Chase Ink Preferred card becomes available later this year, Chase will retire the Ink Plus card. So if you want the Ink Plus card so you can earn 5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points in popular categories like office supply stores and phone, internet, and cable TV services, you should apply before it’s too late.
Because with the new Ink Preferred card, you’ll get 3X Chase Ultimate Rewards points for every $1 you spend on travel, telecommunications, shipping, and advertising on social media and search engines. But it will NOT have any 5X bonus categories.
I suspect the Ink Plus card will keep the 5X bonus categories even after the card is retired. Because although Chase’s Ink Bold card was discontinued in 2014, folks like me who have the card can still earn 5X bonus Chase Ultimate Rewards points in certain categories. But I can’t guarantee anything! And you’ll still be able to earn 5% cash back on certain bonus categories with the no-annual-fee Chase Ink Cash small business card.

Even though the Ink Plus card is being discontinued, the no-annual-fee Chase Ink Cash card will remain open to new applicants.
With the Ink Cash card, you can earn $300 cash back (30,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after meeting minimum spending requirements.
You’ll also get:
- 5% cash back (5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points) on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at office supply stores and on cellular phone, landline, internet and cable TV services each account anniversary year
- 2% cash back (2X Chase Ultimate Rewards points) on the first $25,000 spent in combined purchases at gas stations and restaurants each account anniversary year
- 1% cash back (1X Chase Ultimate Rewards point) on all other purchases
Plus, if you have another Chase card like the Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve, or Ink Bold (no longer available), you can transfer points from the card to hotel and airline partners for Big Travel.
Note: If you don’t qualify for Chase Ink cards because of Chase’s tighter application rules, consider the SimplyCash® Plus Business Credit Card from American Express, which has similar bonus categories.Bottom Line
Chase is launching the new Chase Ink Preferred card by the end of 2016. And once this card is available, the Ink Plus card will no longer be open to new applicants.
So if you’ve been considering the Ink Plus card, and especially if you want to earn 5X bonus Chase Ultimate Rewards points at office supply stores and on things like cell phone bills and cable TV, now is the time to apply. Because the new Chase Ink Preferred card will NOT have any 5X bonus categories.
That said, folks will still be able to get the no-annual-fee Ink Cash card, that earns 5% cash back (5X Chase Ultimate Rewards points) in eligible categories, after the Ink Plus card is retired.
