You can redeem Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, or Starwood points for award nights at all 3 hotel chains.
If you collect Starwood points, you can instantly transfer points to your Marriott account at a 3:1 ratio. And vice versa!
And you can book luxury hotel stays at Ritz-Carlton hotels using Starwood points. Because Marriott and Ritz-Carlton essentially have the same rewards program, just with different marketing and branding.
Before you book your stay, be sure to link your loyalty accounts to get an instant status match. This way, you’ll enjoy all of the perks regardless of which hotel chain you choose.
I haven’t personally stayed at all these hotels, but they get great reviews!
1. Ritz-Carlton Tokyo
If you want to splurge on a luxurious hotel in Tokyo, consider The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo.
This hotel gets almost all 5-star reviews on TripAdvisor for its amazing service, great restaurants, and convenient location.
It’s even located in the Midtown Tower, the tallest building in Tokyo!
I found rooms in May 2017, for ~$719 per night.
Or, you could save your money and use 70,000 Ritz-Carlton points for a free night stay.
And if you don’t have enough Ritz-Carlton points, you can use Marriott points or convert Starwood points to cover your stay. You’d need to transfer 24,000 Starwood points to have enough for a free night (because you must transfer in 1,000-point increments).
That’s a lot of points, but it could be worth it if you’re celebrating a special occasion or want to impress a friend or loved one. 😉
2. The Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho, a Luxury Collection Hotel
The Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho, a Luxury Collection Hotel opened in July 2016 and gets great reviews on TripAdvisor.Folks enjoyed the panoramic views of the city and the hotel’s clean & modern design. And popular sites like the Imperial Palace and Tokyo National Museum are within a ~30 minute drive.
Rooms here in May 2017, cost ~$659 or 25,000 Starwood points per night. So you’re definitely getting Big Travel using your points here!
And if you don’t have enough Starwood points in your account, you could convert 75,000 Marriott points (25,000 X 3) for an award night. Saving you over $650!
3. The Prince Sakura Tower Tokyo
If you’re looking for a conveniently located hotel in a peaceful setting, consider The Prince Sakura Tower Tokyo, Autograph Collection.
Travelers love that it’s close to public transportation, is only a ~20 minute drive to the airport, and has spacious rooms. And it gets 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor!
A night here in May 2017, costs $465 or 40,000 Marriott points.
That means you’d only need 14,000 Starwood points for an award stay! That’s a great deal, because you’re saving a LOT by using points.
4. Tokyo Marriott Hotel
The Tokyo Marriott Hotel is located in Tokyo’s historic Gotenyama district, on a main train line that connects it and other parts of the city to the rest of Japan. So it’s a great jumping-off point for a visit to Japan!
It’s also next to the beautiful traditional Japanese-style garden, Gotenyama Garden, one of the area’s top tourist attractions.
You’ll pay 40,000 Marriott points for an award night. Or you can convert 14,000 Starwood points.
Depending on when you stay, you could save nearly $300 using your Marriott or Starwood points here!
5. The Westin Tokyo
The Westin Tokyo is another great option if you’re looking for a quiet retreat within the bustling city of Tokyo.Reviewers on TripAdvisor give this hotel high ratings for its quiet rooms, excellent staff, and convenient location.
Some rooms even have views of Mount Fuji in the distance!
Rooms here in May 2017, cost ~$242 or 20,000 Starwood points per night
You could also use 60,000 Marriott points for an award night here! Because Marriott points transfer to Starwood points at a 3:1 ratio.
Which Cards Earn You Points for Free Stays?
You can use points from either of the 3 loyalty programs to book an award night.
1. Marriott and Ritz-Carlton Credit Cards
Link: Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card (personal)
Link: Marriott Rewards Premier Business Card (small business)
With the Marriott Rewards Premier personal and small business cards, you’ll earn 80,000 Marriott points after completing minimum spending requirements.
If you get the personal version of the card, you can earn another 7,500 bonus Marriott points when you add an authorized user and make a purchase within the first 3 months of opening your account. The $85 annual fee is NOT waived for the first year.
The $99 annual fee on the small business version of the card is also NOT waived for the first year. Here’s my review of the offer.
2. Starwood Credit Cards
Link: Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express (personal)
Link: Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express (small business)
You can earn 25,000 Starwood points after completing the minimum spending requirements on the AMEX Starwood personal and small business cards.
For everyday non-bonus spending, I recommend the AMEX Starwood cards. Because you’ll earn 1 Starwood point per $1 you spend, which can be converted to 3 Marriott or Ritz-Carlton points. That’s better than the 1 Marriott or Ritz-Carlton point per $1 you spend you’ll get with the Marriott and Ritz-Carlton cards. Also, the AMEX cards are easier to get than the Chase cards. Because earlier this year, Chase started to make it difficult for folks to be approved for Chase cards if you’ve opened ~5 or more credit cards (from any bank) in the past 24 months (excluding certain business cards). But remember, you can only earn the bonus on any AMEX card ONCE per lifetime.
3. Ritz-Carlton Card
Link: Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card
You can earn 3 free nights at participating Ritz-Carlton tier 1 through 4 hotels after spending $5,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of opening a Chase Ritz-Carlton card.
You’ll also get 10,000 Ritz-Carlton points when you add an authorized user and make a purchase in the same timeframe.
The $450 annual fee is NOT waived the first year, but the card offers perks that offset the annual fee. Here’s my review of the deal.
And Chase’s stricter approval rules do NOT apply to the Chase Ritz-Carlton card. So if you’ve opened more than ~5 credit cards within the past 24 months from ANY bank (except certain small business cards), you could still be approved for this card.
Bottom Line
You can use Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, or Starwood points to stay at terrific hotels in Tokyo.
For example, you could redeem points for free nights at the luxurious The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo.
Redeeming points can save you hundreds of dollars compared to the cash cost of a room night.
Before you book, be sure to link your Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, and Starwood loyalty accounts. This way you’ll enjoy the benefits of your elite status across all 3 hotel chains!
Have you used points to stay in Tokyo? I’d love to hear about your experience!
