Million Mile Secrets reader Waldorf emailed:
Hi, I am wondering if I already had the American Express Premier Rewards Gold card, would I be able to get the sign-up bonus for the American Express Platinum card? Thanks!
Although Waldorf has the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express , he can get the sign-up bonus on the American Express Platinum card!
That’s because they are different card products. Keep reading to learn more!

Waldorf can get 40,000 American Express Membership Rewards points from the American Express Platinum card after spending $3,000 within 3 months. As always, terms and limitations apply.
The usual sign-up bonus is 25,000 American Express Membership Rewards points, so this is a good deal! But there have been higher offers previously. And the Mercedes Benz Platinum card offers 50,000 points which is a better deal!
With the American Express Platinum card, Waldorf gets:
- Up to a $200 Airline Credit each year
- To receive the statement credit, you need to select a qualifying airline
- Airport lounge access (Delta, Priority Pass, Airspace, and American Express Centurion Lounges)
- $100 statement credit for Global Entry (a huge time saver!)
- Terms & limitations apply
The $450 annual fee is NOT waived.
I love American Express Membership Rewards points because they are flexible. Waldorf can transfer them to certain airlines and hotels.

Different Card Products
Although American Express issues both the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express and the American Express Platinum card, they are 2 different card products. That’s because they are 2 distinct charge cards. And you can get a sign-up bonus for each!
So Waldorf can get the sign-up bonus for the American Express Platinum card!
But he can NOT get the sign-up bonus for the American Express Platinum again card IF he had the personal American Express Platinum card in the past.
With American Express, Waldorf can NOT get the sign-up again on the personal cards that he has had previously.
Personal American Express cards have the these terms and conditions:
If we identify you as currently having an American Express® Card account, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer. This offer is also not available to applicants who have or have had this product.
However, Waldorf CAN get the sign-up bonus again on the American Express Platinum business card IF it’s been over 12 months since he last had the card. That’s because business and personal American Express cards have different rules about sign-up bonuses.
Bottom Line
Waldorf can get the sign-up bonus on the American Express Platinum card even if he has the American Express Premier Rewards Gold card. That’s because they are different card products.
American Express has different sign-up bonus rules for personal and business cards. Waldorf can NOT get the sign-up bonus again for an American Express personal card.
But Waldorf CAN get it again on the business version of a card, like the American Express Platinum or Mercedes Benz Platinum card IF it’s been at least 12 months since he last had the card.
