Get a Head Start on Earning Delta Elite Status With the AMEX Delta Platinum Business Card

The AMEX Delta Platinum Business card earns 2 Delta miles per $1 spent with Delta and 1 Delta mile on all other purchases.  While those earning rates aren’t too exciting, the card can be great if you’re working toward Delta elite status.

To qualify for Delta elite status, you will need to earn enough Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) or Medallion Qualification Segments AND spend a certain amount on eligible Delta purchases to earn enough Medallion® Qualification Dollars (MQDs).  Or, you can qualify for the MQD waiver with enough AMEX Delta credit card spending.

The AMEX Delta Platinum Small Business Card Makes Delta Elite Status Much More Attainable

As a cardholder, you’ll earn 10,000 MQMs and 10,000 bonus Delta miles when you spend $25,000+ in a calendar year.  And you’ll earn an MQD waiver for Silver, Gold, or Platinum status at the same time!  With the MQD waiver, you won’t have to meet the MQD requirements to earn those status levels.

You’ll also earn an additional 10,000 MQMs and 10,000 bonus Delta miles when you spend a total of $50,000 in the same calendar year.

Note:   To earn an MQD waiver for Delta Diamond Medallion® status you’ll need to spend $250,000+ on eligible purchases on your card in a calendar year.

What Can You Do With 50,000 Delta Miles?

When you use Delta’s Pay With Miles option, you can redeem Delta miles for 1 cent each toward flights.  So at the very minimum, the card’s welcome bonus is worth $500 in Delta flights!

Delta Frequently Has Sales to Europe. You Can Use Your Delta Miles to Book These Deals!

You can use Pay With Miles to fully or partially pay for the ticket.  And because these are paid (NOT award) tickets, you’ll earn miles and elite qualifying dollars for your flight!

But you can save MUCH more than that if you use Delta miles for award flights!  Delta no longer has an award chart, so you’ll have to search your specific route to see how many miles you’ll pay for your flight.

Keep in mind, you’ll still have to pay taxes & fees for award tickets.  That’s usually not an issue, but something to factor in to be sure you’re getting the best deal.

If you live in (or near!) one of Delta’s hub cities, this card will be a particularly good value for you.  That’s because hub cities have the most flights to popular destinations around the world!

Here are a few examples of what you can accomplish when you open this card and meet the minimum spending requirements!

1.   Flights Within North America

Award flights within the US can be a very good deal when you use Delta miles! Routes start at just 5,000 miles one-way.  Here are a few ways you could spend the miles you’ll earn by opening the AMEX Delta Platinum business card:

  • 2 round-trip coach flights between Los Angeles and Miami
  • 3 round-trip coach flights between Cincinnati and Toronto
  • 4 round-trip coach flights between Miami and Cancun
Cancun Is a Popular Destination With Lots of Million Mile Secrets Readers!

Keep in mind, you might have to be flexible with your travel dates to find low-level Delta award flights. That said, it’s easy to use the flexible calendar tool on Delta.com to search for award flights.

2.   International Award Flights to Destinations in Europe, South America, and Beyond!

Delta partners with airlines like Aeromexico, Air France, and Korean Air. So you have lots of options when using miles for an award flight!

You can reach most destinations in North America, Europe, and South America by earning the welcome bonus on AMEX Delta Platinum business card.

For example, with the 50,000-mile bonus, you can book:

  • 1 coach flight between San Francisco and Paris
  • 1 coach flight between New York and Honolulu
  • 1 coach flight between Chicago and Tel Aviv
  • 1 coach flight between Minneapolis and Lima
Fly to Lima and Hike Peruvian Splendor!  Team Member Joseph Hiked the Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu!

A one-way ticket from Minneapolis to Lima can easily cost $500+.  So earning enough miles for an award flight can be a terrific deal!

3.   Take Advantage of Delta Award Sales!

Delta has regular award sales which can save you bunches of Delta miles!

In the past, there have been round-trip awards on sale to Europe for 33,000 Delta miles round-trip and to Asia for only 50,000 Delta miles round-trip.  And they’ve had other award sales to other destinations like Mexico, the Caribbean, and domestic awards for over 50% off!

Benefits of the AMEX Delta Platinum Business Card

The AMEX Delta Platinum Business card has other benefits that can help you out in a tough situation.  You’ll get secondary coverage for your luggage, rental car, and certain purchases.  You’ll also get other perks like an extended warranty on eligible purchases and travel accident insurance.

Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance (Secondary)

This insurance will cover authorized drivers for damage to or theft of most rental cars.  The coverage kicks in only when you pay for the entire rental with your card.  This benefit is secondary to other insurance.

Travel Accident Insurance

You’re covered for up to $100,000 for an eligible loss from an eligible injury.  This coverage applies only when the entire fare has been charged to your card.  The insurance applies to the cardholder and any authorized users on the account.  In addition, spouses or domestic partners and dependent children under 23 of both the cardholder and authorized users are covered as well.

Roadside Assistance Hotline

The Roadside Assistance Hotline is a 24-hour service that will help you coordinate emergency services like a tow truck or locksmith.  This is a free service to use, but you’ll still have to pay for the tow truck or services you use.

Baggage Insurance (Secondary)

When you pay for the entire fare of your trip with your card you’ll get supplemental lost baggage insurance.  The coverage applies to you, your spouse or partner, and dependent children under the age of 23.

Extended Warranty

If the original warranty is for less than 2 years, this coverage will match the length of that warranty.  This essentially doubles the length of the coverage.  If the original manufacturer’s warranty is between 2 and 5 years, you’ll get an additional 2 years of coverage.  However, if you purchase something with an original warranty of 5+ years, this benefit will not apply.

You must make the purchase with your eligible card for the coverage to apply.  And the coverage is limited to $10,000 per incident and $50,000 per calendar year.

Purchase Protection (Secondary)

This benefit covers theft or damage for 120 days from the date of purchase when you pay at least part of the purchase with your card.  You will only be reimbursed up to the amount you charged to your eligible card.  Qualifying items are covered for up to $1,000 per incident ($50,000 per year).

Return Protection

If you’ve made a qualifying purchase, entirely with your card, you may be eligible for return protection.  You can be reimbursed up to $300 per item ($1,000 per calendar year) for eligible items that cannot be returned to the original merchant.  This benefit is limited to purchases made within the past 90 days.

Free ShopRunner Membership

You’ll get a free ShopRunner membership, worth $79 per year!  This perk gets you free 2-day shipping on eligible items at 140+ online stores!  And you’ll get free shipping on returns too!

Simplify Your Book Keeping

You can upload your business receipts to the AMEX Spend Manager app, which will help you keep track of, organize, and store your receipts for 7 years (or until your account is closed).  You can also use the app to monitor employee spending.  And you can use the Connect to Quickbooks feature to have your business transactions automatically uploaded to Quickbooks.

Is the AMEX Delta Platinum Business Card Worth the Annual Fee?

The 50,000 Delta miles you can earn from the card’s welcome offer are worth at least $500…and potentially much more!  So you’ll get much more value than the $195 annual fee for at least the first year.

But the card can very easily be worth keeping year after year because of its ongoing benefits.

You’ll receive a domestic round-trip companion certificate every time you pay your annual fee.  With this perk, you can take a friend or family member with you in coach to anywhere in the continental US for just the cost of taxes & fees!  If you book a ~$200 flight for yourself and add a companion, you’ve already offset the card’s annual fee!

And you can save hundreds every year by taking advantage of AMEX Offers for all sorts of purchases, like cruises, hotels, and everyday items!

Does the AMEX Delta Platinum Business Card Have a Foreign Transaction Fee?

No.

Who Is Eligible for the AMEX Delta Platinum Business Card?

The card’s welcome bonus and ongoing benefits make it worth adding to your wallet.  And because it’s an AMEX small business card, it will NOT appear on your personal credit report.  So you can open this card and still remain below the Chase “5/24 rule”!

But before applying, ask yourself these 3 questions to increase your odds of being approved.

1.   Is Your Credit Score Above 700?

To have the best odds of being approved for travel rewards cards, you’ll want a credit score above 700.  This isn’t a hard rule, but folks in the miles & points community generally recommend building your credit score until it’s 700+.

I Recommend Building Your Credit and Having a Score Above 700 Before Applying for This Card

You can check your credit score for free at myBankrate.

2.   Have You Opened This Card Before?

AMEX only allows folks to earn the intro bonus once per person, per lifetime, on ALL their cards.  But each Delta card is considered a different product.  So if you’ve never had this particular card before, you’re eligible to earn the bonus.

3.   Are You a Small Business Owner?

You don’t need to own a multi-million dollar company qualify for the AMEX Delta Platinum business card.  Even folks with part-time businesses might be eligible to apply for the card and earn the bonus!

For example, you could apply with your eBay business, Uber driving business, or real estate business using your social security number.

Customer Support

I’ve found American Express customer service to be relatively easy to deal with.  You can take care of most issues or get your questions answered easily through their secure chat feature.

In my experience, AMEX representatives tend to be thorough, too.  In the past, I was sent an unsolicited email by customer service after they discovered a chat agent had given me the wrong information.

Can’t Qualify for the AMEX Platinum Delta Card? Here’s an Amazing Alternative!

If you’re looking to earn Delta miles, but don’t qualify for the AMEX Delta Platinum Business card, you could collect AMEX Membership Rewards points instead.  AMEX Membership Rewards points transfer at a 1:1 ratio to Delta!

The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN could be a great fit for your small business.  It has a HUGE intro bonus and lots of other great perks!

You can earn 50,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points after you spend $10,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.  Plus another 25,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points after you spend an additional $10,000 on qualifying purchases within the same timeframe.

That’s a whopping 95,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points once you include the points you’ll earn from the minimum spending (75,000-point intro bonus + at least 20,000 points from the minimum spending)!

The card also comes with a host of other perks, like:

  • 5X AMEX Membership Rewards points when you book airfare or prepaid hotels through the AMEX travel portal
  • 35% of your points back for ALL First Class or Business Class flights booked through the AMEX travel portal using Pay With Points
  • 35% of your points back for all flights, including coach tickets, booked with your selected airline through the AMEX travel portal using Pay With Points (up to 500,000 points per calendar year)
  • Up to $200 in statement credits per calendar year for airline incidentals with your selected airline (luggage fees, in-flight food & drink, etc.)
  • Ability to book hotel stays through AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts
  • Access to airport lounges (Delta, Priority Pass, Airspace, Escape, and American Express Centurion Lounges)
  • Bonus points or statement credits when taking advantage of an AMEX Offer
  • Free Hilton Honors Gold elite status (free breakfast and upgrades when available)
  • Free Starwood / Marriott Gold elite status
  • 10 free Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi passes each calendar year
  • Statement credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
  • Terms & limitations apply

The AMEX Platinum Business card has a $450 annual fee.  But the generous perks can easily offset it.

And you’ll earn more rewards, for certain purchases, compared to the AMEX Delta Platinum Business card.  So if you make a lot of large purchases ($5,000+) or spend a lot of airfare or prepaid hotels booked through the AMEX travel portal, then the AMEX Platinum Business is a better card for your business.

Bottom Line

Take advantage of the limited-time AMEX Delta Platinum Business card offer to start traveling to destinations on your bucket list!

Apply for the AMEX Delta Platinum business card before November 7, 2018, and you’ll earn 50,000 Delta miles after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening!  You’ll also earn a $100 statement credit when you make a Delta purchase within the first 3 months.

With a haul of 50,000 Delta miles, you can book:

  • $500 in paid Delta flights (without having to look for available award seats!) or
  • 2 round-trip coach flights between Los Angeles and Miami or
  • 1 coach flight between San Francisco and Paris

And opening the card will NOT affect your chances of being approved for valuable Chase cards in the future.

I’m getting ready to get one of the Delta Platinum cards. I see virtually no difference between business and personal versions. The only difference I see on Delta’s site is that with the biz card you can get employee cards and an expense tracking app. I’m looking at two different pages and charts to compare them, though, so I’m not sure. Does that sound about right?

Can one have BOTH the AMEX delta platinum biz and the AMEX platinum biz card? I’ve had the delta card for a long time and value the benefits on delta but also interest in branching into membership rewards and have the spend to meet the bonus requirements. thanks!

You can have both because they are considered separate products.
