Emily Jablon: Daraius and I went to Maui, Hawaii in March 2013.  We loved Hawaii so much that we decided to return, but this time to Kauai.  Kauai is more laid back and less built-up than Maui.

We Loved Hawaii So Much the 1st Time, We Couldn’t Wait to Come Back

We went to Kauai over Valentine’s Day week, which made for a very romantic getaway.  Using our miles and points made it even better!

Winter Getaway to Kauai – Trip Report Index:

Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa

The Grand Hyatt Kauai is spread out over 52 acres.  Despite its size, the resort is laid out well and accessing the pool, restaurants, and spa is very convenient.

The hotel has 602 hotel rooms.  It also has:

I liked the location of the Hyatt because you can still drive (or walk) to nearby restaurants and beaches.  There are also excellent golf courses nearby.

Daraius Is Prepared With an Umbrella in Kauai!

The resort is very well kept and is nestled among palm trees and tropical plants.

There is self-parking and valet parking in the parking lot.  Self-parking is included with the resort fee ($25 per night) and valet parking costs $15 per day.  You don’t pay the resort fee if you redeem Hyatt points for each night, but will pay the resort fee if you use a combination of Hyatt points and cash.

Big Travel With Small Money Means We Self-Parked

We never had difficulty finding space in the self-parking lot, and it was only a ~3 minute walk to the hotel.

We Got Our Daily Exercise Walking to the Car

On the walk from the parking lot, we discovered a small pond with black swans and big goldfish.

I think the swan was hungry, but we didn’t feed it.

The hotel had a large porte cochere for vehicles.

Daraius Was Thrilled to Get Away From Work for a Few Days!

After we parked, we saw a sign that said we needed a permit to park our car.  We never had 1 for the 5 nights we were here!

Lobby & Atrium

The hotel had a large lobby…

The hotel had a classic, timeless look to it.

Lots of Wood, Wicker, and Tropical Plants

The lobby was impressive, and 1 of my favorite focal points was the grand chandelier.

The Grand Hyatt was very well landscaped.  You could tell that the employees really cared about the property and made an effort to keep it clean and tidy.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Pools

I liked that there were different kinds of pools.  There is an adult pool, a saltwater pool, a freshwater pool, and a kids’ pool.

Some of the pools were joined with a lazy river.  There was even a saltwater pool with sand.

The beach was located just steps away from the resort.  However, we were warned against swimming because of the high winds and strong currents.

Dondero’s, the Italian restaurant, is another option.  There’s also a poolside restaurant, in addition to a few other eateries on the resort.

Within a 15 minute drive, there are dozens of other (less expensive) restaurants.

Anara Spa

The Grand Hyatt also has a spa which has won awards.

The change rooms were plain but tidy and well kept.

The Island-Style Wooden Lockers Were Unusual

There were showers, a hot tub, steam room, and dry sauna.  It also had a lap pool.

The spa seemed dated and the surroundings were not as pleasant as the main resort areas!  I wasn’t that impressed.

How You Can Do It, Too!

We redeemed 20,000 United Airlines miles each and 17,500 American Airlines miles each for 1-way flights in coach to and from Austin and Kauai, Hawaii.  We could have redeemed our miles for First Class seats but we like saving those for longer flights.

We used 41,295 Citi ThankYou points to pay for our car rental.

Daraius transferred 103,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt points for 3 nights in a Garden View room. And 3 nights in a Garden View suite at the Grand Hyatt Kauai.

How Many Points You Need:

  • Points Only:  150,000 Hyatt points for 6 nights
  • Points + Cash:  75,000 Hyatt points and $1,188 for 6 nights
  • Just like Daraius & Emily:  66,000 Hyatt points for 3 nights in a Garden View room, before the Hyatt award chart change.  But now it is 75,000 Hyatt points.  And 37,500 Hyatt points + $596 and a Diamond Suite upgrade for 3 nights in a Garden View Suite.
Note:  If you don’t have a Diamond Suite upgrade, you can use 6,000 Hyatt points per night to upgrade a paid room to a suite.  But you can NOT upgrade a Points + Cash room to a suite without a Diamond Suite upgrade.

How to Get the Points:

The easiest way to get points for Kauai is by applying for credit cards.

Here’s my post on the best way to get Hyatt points.

1.   Chase Hyatt Card

You can save some Chase Ultimate Rewards points and get 2 free nights at any Hyatt worldwide after you spend $1,000 within 3 months on the Chase Hyatt card.

2.   Chase Sapphire Preferred Card

You get 40,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points when you spend $4,000 within 3 months on the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be transferred to certain airlines and hotels at a 1:1 ratio.  So 40,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points becomes 40,000 airline miles or 40,000 hotel points.

3.   Chase Ink Cards

The Chase Ink Plus and Chase Ink Bold card each get you 50,000 Ultimate Rewards points after spending $5,000 within 3 months.

Do you know the 3 ways you may qualify for a business credit card?

Note:  You can apply for 1 personal and 1 business card from Chase at the same time.  But you do NOT have to wait 6 months between Chase applications.

Bottom Line

The Grand Hyatt in Kauai was beautiful with its lush green setting, meandering pools, and close proximity to the beach.

The spa was a bit dated, but the friendly staff and attention to detail made it a place worth redeeming our miles for.

I also liked that it was close to restaurants and activities outside of the hotel.  We got a chance to try lots of local cuisine!
