Citi is an MMS advertising partner
When you sign-up for the Citi Premier℠ Card, you’ll earn an increased welcome bonus of 60,000 Citi ThankYou points after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.
This is an excellent offer! The points you earn are transferable, which gives you more flexibility by letting you access Citi’s airline partners. That’s one great reason to open the card.
But after the alluring welcome bonus, does the card have solid enough benefits to stay in your wallet? For most folks, Citi Premier benefits and perks make it MORE than worth keeping year after year.
You can apply for the Citi Premier here.
I’ll show you why the Citi Premier’s benefits and perks can easily offset the card’s $95 annual fee and save you a bundle each year.

In addition to the valuable sign-up bonus, there are other ongoing perks and benefits that make the Citi Premier worth keeping long term.
Here are the standout benefits of the card.
Citi Price Rewind
Citi Price Rewind is a unique perk you’ll find on all Citi personal cards. When you pay for registered items at certain online stores, Citi will automatically check for a lower price at other merchants.
If Citi finds the same item at a lower price within 60 days of when you purchased an item, you may receive a credit for the price difference. To be eligible for coverage, you’ll need to pay for the item at least in part with your Citi card.
Team member Harlan uses this perk ALL THE TIME. He says it’s handy for tracking price drops on Amazon.
Most of the price rewind refunds are small, but those can add up fast! Honestly, it’s entirely possible to offset the Citi Premier‘s annual fee with this benefit alone.
Coverage is limited to the lesser of $200 or the amount charged to your card, and the maximum coverage is $1,000 per calendar year.
When you pay for an eligible item with the Citi Premier, it’s possible to extend the manufacturer’s warranty by an additional 24 months (total coverage between both the manufacturer’s warranty and extended warranty cannot exceed 84 months). That’s better than a LOT of other cards.
Here’s a chart to see how Citi extends your warranty.
Coverage is limited to the lesser of the following:
- The cost to repair or replace the item
- The purchase price of the item
- The amount charged to the Citi Card (including ThankYou Points)
- $10,000 per item
There are several excluded purchases, like cars, tires, plants, animals, etc. You can check the complete Guide to Benefits to check exclusions and to learn how to file a claim.
90-Day Return Protection
If you try to return an item within 90 days of when you purchased it and the merchant won’t take it back, Citi may refund you up to $300 per item, up to $1,000 total per year. Just make sure you pay in full with your Citi Premier or with Citi ThankYou points.
This benefit can only be used for items you buy in the US. So if you find a lower price on those Russian Nesting Dolls you purchased from that gypsy in Red Square, Citi won’t accept your claim.
90-day return protection has similar restrictions to Extended Warranty benefit. There are several items that don’t qualify. Again, you can read the benefits guide for a full list.
When you pay for travel with your Citi Premier, including award flight taxes and fees, you’ll be covered for lots of awful possibilities. To qualify for these benefits, you’ll need to pay for at least a portion of your common carrier fare (planes, trains, cruises, ferries) with your Citi Premier.
You and your entire family traveling with you can be covered with these perks! As a matter of fact, your family members are insured even if you’re NOT traveling, so long as you pay with your card.
These benefits are secondary, so if the common carrier reimburses you for anything, this will only kick in for the things they don’t cover.
Trip Delay Insurance
You’ll get up to $500 per covered traveler to pay for things like meals, ground transportation and hotels if your trip is delayed over 12 hours. You can even buy other necessities, like toiletries, and have those reimbursed.
Trip delay insurance will kick in for reasons like:
- The airline decides to cancel or delay your flight
- Your passport, money, or other critical documents are lost or stolen
- There is severe weather or natural disaster
- Pilots go on strike and ruin your itinerary
Baggage Delay / Lost Baggage Insurance
You’ll get up to $100 per covered traveler if your bags are delayed six or more hours.
And if the common carrier straight up loses your bag, each covered traveler can receive up to $3,000 per trip (New York residents are covered for $2,000 per bag), up to $10,000 in total for all covered travelers.
Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance
You may be reimbursed up to $5,000 per trip if the trip is cancelled or interrupted. An eligible reason would be:
- A medical professional advises you not to travel due to injury or sickness
- You’re laid off or fired from your job
- You die
- Severe weather halts all travel to your destination for 24 hours
Just make sure you notify your common carrier as soon as possible that you’re canceling or changing your plans.
Having automatic travel protection is a fantastic perk that can save you a lot of money. But hopefully you’ll never have to use it!
Car Rental Insurance
Wrap your rental car around a tree? You’re covered up to $50,000 toward the cost of repairs or the cash value of your rental car, whichever is less in the event of a covered accident or theft.
There are a couple super important details here.
First, this coverage is secondary in the US. So if you have auto insurance, this will only cover what your personal insurance doesn’t. But internationally, the coverage is primary.
Also, the length of your rental car agreement must be no more than 31 days.
You’re covered for the following misfortunes:
- Your car is damaged in an accident or natural disaster
- Your car is vandalized
- Your car is stolen
Credit card rental insurance has save me THOUSANDS in the past. I scraped my car against a pole, and my credit card reimbursed me the full amount the rental agency charged me (well over $2,000!).
If you use the full spectrum of benefits and perks that come with the Citi Premier, you shouldn’t have any trouble justifying the annual fee. Just make sure you don’t have other cards in your wallet that already come with benefits like this. You don’t want to continue to pay more annual fees than you need to!
Citi Price Rewind can save you up to $1,000 per year, depending on how much you shop. And with the primary insurance for international rental cars, you’ll avoid spending ~$15 per day on the rental agency’s in-house coverage. This can add up quickly!
I definitely recommend at least trying out the Citi Premier. Right now, you can earn an increased bonus of 60,000 Citi ThankYou points after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.
