The Chicago DO was a blast!

Chicago DO 2011
Emily & Mommy Points

Emily and I had a great time meeting blog readers, the speakers, and other bloggers who attended the event.

Million Mile Secrets Booth

This was Emily’s first time at a mile and point conference, and she did a terrific job with the Million Mile Secret’s booth.

I was even more impressed when Emily mentioned to me later that she had met “Randy.”

“Randy who” I asked?

The Randy” she replied.

I was surprised that Emily knew who Randy Petersen was, because I’ve never talked about him to her.  I then learned that Emily was secretly reading my Inside Flyer magazine (that’s my girl!) and had seen Randy’s picture in the magazine and recognized him at the conference!

Randy is the smartest person on miles and points that I’ve ever met.  Not only is he the oracle of all things miles and points, but also a terribly nice and unassuming person.

Tom Stuker, who flew 10 million miles on United was also at the conference.

Rick and Win did a great job organizing the conference and it went off without a hitch.

Rapid Travel Chai had the adventurous goal of meeting all 500 attendees, but ran out of time as the conversations were long and the 2 allotted days were much too short!

But he compiled a great list of the key learnings from the Chicago Seminars.  The most important one being that you have to set your own goals and collect miles and points with YOUR goal in mind.

Mommy Points has another great post on the weekend.  She  explains that you may be disappointed with the conference if you expected to find methods to book the Park Hyatt in Tokyo for $49 or the secret way to open up award availability at the low level.

Mileage Runs Workshop

If you read FlyerTalk and MilePoint for hours each day, you likely wouldn’t learn as much as someone who is just starting out.  But you just may pick up a few tricks late at night while having a drink. 🙂

The camaraderie and socializing is one of the biggest reasons to attend events like the Chicago seminars, because no one will look at you funny or raise their eyebrows when you start talking about miles and points!  And the connections you make could lead you to more miles and points.

Darren from Frequently Flying posted a great day-by-day summary of the event for those of you curious about what we did.

The next Chicago seminar is planned tentatively for mid-September 2012.  Emily and I will be there and look forward to meeting with old and new friends again!

I’m behind on email and comments, but will respond over the next few days.

Hey, I was just to the right of Emily in that first picture with MommyPoints. I was ducking to keep out of the shot!

The guy sitting with me is Howie (Hdawg) who writes for me as a Double Diamond (250,000 miles) this year on Tuesdays as a business traveler.

It was a delight to meet the Million Mile Couple and a wonderful weekend!
