Emily: One of my best friends lives in Arlington, Virginia, so I don’t see her very often.  We met in college and have been friends ever since.  The first (and last) time we took a vacation together was to Barcelona, Spain in 2007.

I thought it would be super fun to celebrate my 30th birthday with her in the Dominican Republic.  So we planned a trip to 3 locations, including Santo Domingo, Bayahibe, and Bavaro (near Punta Cana) over the course of one week.

Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe

I booked us for two nights in a Deluxe Room at the Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe.  The cost was ~$160 per night and was an all-inclusive rate.  The hotel is one of the largest hotels I have stayed in.  It rivals a Las Vegas hotel!

There are 11 restaurants including 2 buffets.

In addition, there are 14 bars, a club, and a casino.  There are 1,600 rooms and I estimated there were at least 2,000 people staying at the resort.

Here’s a video of our room:

It took us about 20 minutes to check in.  It’s a huge resort, so everything takes a long time.

There was a large check-in area.  But there was plenty of seating while you waited.

The hotel was modern and had recent upgrades.

I had emailed the staff to let them know about my allergy and requesting an upgrade, if available, for my birthday.

When we checked in, I again mentioned how excited we were to be here and celebrate my birthday.  She said she could give me an upgrade but that the room wasn’t ready yet.

So, we went to the Guest Services area to meet with Claudia, who requested I meet with her upon check-in regarding my food allergy.

Claudia was very nice and escorted us to meet all three of the restaurant chefs.  She wanted them to know who I was and to know the chef’s names so I could ask for them when I had my meals.  I was very happy that they took my allergy so seriously!

Junior Suite Deluxe Room

We were escorted to our room when it was ready, and were delighted to see that we had been upgraded to a Junior Suite Deluxe, which was one category higher than the room we booked!

On the left side was the bathroom, and the main living area was in the back.

@Katie- Thanks! I loved the country and hope to return again soon. There’s so much to see, and you’re right–the people are very friendly, and I loved the food and beaches!

@Donnie Law- The suite was very nice, and the hotel was also nice, but huge!

@Kyle- The room felt very spacious, and was more long than wide. It was also a free upgrade! We did not use miles or points for the hotel. It was around $160 per night all inclusive.

@Soltatio- The jacuzzi was awesome! It also lit up to a neon blue at night. The chocolate was delicious! It was nice they surprised us for my birthday.

@Lisa- Glad you enjoyed it! I wanted to go somewhere that had history but also nice beaches. The Dominican Republic was a perfect choice! We also liked the jacuzzi. The highlight of the trip was Isla Saona, which we covered in an earlier post.

Being from Florida, I tend to disregard the Caribbean as a travel destination, but this series is making me reconsider. I really never think about the history and culture of the Caribbean, but you’ve done a good job of showing it off.

I’m also a big fan of a private jacuzzi with the room. That’s a nice highlight!

@ Kyle. If u travel to enough places OUTSIDE the US u will see that space comes at a premium, but also that the space doesnt matter as much as the amenities.
But wowza tgat jacuzzi looks awesome. That is definitwly something more hotels should include.
Loved the little chocolate plate too. Congrats Emily!

Wow! That’s an upgraded suite??? I’ve had more space & room in a Fairfield Inn!

The location (near the water) and Jacuzzi can’t be found in FairField Inn but that is one small room!

Did you use miles or points to get this room? There is no mention of that – unless I looked over it while looking at the great pictures.

…and the picture of the “White Sand Beach” – Looks VERY nice and inviting!

I’ve never seen SO many palm or coconut trees on a resort or beach!

That suite looks awesome!

My wife and I stayed at “secrets excellence” in Punta Cana about 7 years ago. It was nice but had that damp and musty caribbean feel. It wasn’t anything like the bavaro palace!
