AMEX Membership Rewards points are extremely valuable, especially for folks looking to save money on travel! The points you can earn from this offer (welcome bonus plus points from minimum spending) can easily get you nearly $1,400 worth of airfare (and potentially MUCH more)!
I applied for the AMEX Business Platinum in 2016 when there was a 100,000-point offer. And I’ve kept the card since because it has fantastic perks I frequently use, like access to the best airport lounges and AMEX Offers.
This offer isn’t a great deal for everyone because there’s a hefty tiered minimum spending requirement. But it could make sense if you’re planning to make a few large purchases in the near future. Or if you use a service to like Plastiq to pay big bills like rent with the card.
Here’s our review of the AMEX Business Platinum card!
AMEX Business Platinum Card
When you apply for the AMEX Business Platinum card you’ll earn:
- 50,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points after you spend $10,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.
- 25,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points after you spend an additional $10,000 on qualifying purchases within the same timeframe
So between the intro bonus and points you earn from minimum spending, you’ll have at least 95,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points (75,000 point total intro bonus + at least 20,000 minimum spending points).
Personally, I like the AMEX Business Platinum better than the personal version (The Platinum Card® from American Express). The welcome bonus is larger and the annual fee is $100 cheaper. That said, you’ll have to spend more with the business version to unlock the intro bonus.
AMEX Membership Rewards points are popular transferable points to collect. Because you get flexibility to redeem points for award travel with any of the 19 AMEX airline or hotel partners. You can also use points to buy gift cards to popular stores and restaurants.
With the Business Platinum card, you’ll also get:
- 1.5X AMEX Membership Rewards points on single purchases of $5,000+ (up to 1 million additional points per calendar year)
- 5X AMEX Membership Rewards points when you book airfare and hotels through the AMEX travel portal
- 35% of your points back for ALL First Class or Business Class flights booked through the AMEX travel portal using Pay With Points
- 35% of your points back for all flights, including coach tickets, booked with your selected airline through the AMEX travel portal using Pay With Points (up to 500,000 points per calendar year)
- Up to $200 in statement credits per calendar year for airline incidentals with your selected airline (luggage fees, in-flight food & drink, etc.)
- Ability to book hotel stays through AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts
- AMEX Platinum Concierge
- AMEX Premium Roadside Assistance
- Access to airport lounges (Delta, Priority Pass, Airspace, and American Express Centurion Lounges)
- Bonus points or statement credits when taking advantage of an AMEX Offer
- Elite car rental status with Avis, Executive status with National Car Rental, and Gold Plus Rewards with Hertz
- Free Hilton Honors Gold elite status (free breakfast and upgrades when available)
- Free Starwood Gold elite status, which you can use to instantly match to Marriott Gold elite status
- 10 free Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi passes each calendar year
- Statement credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
- Terms & limitations apply
This card has a $450 annual fee, which is NOT waived the first year. But the statement credits, airport lounge access, and savings from AMEX Offers can easily offset the fee. I gladly pay the annual fee because I come out ahead just by enjoying 1 or 2 adult beverages each time I pass through an AMEX Centurion Lounge.
And you can earn the $200 airline incidental credit each calendar year. So you can earn it in 2018 and again in early 2019. This means you’re effectively only paying $50 ($450 annual fee – $400 total statement credits) in the first year you have the card.
Another excellent reason to apply for the AMEX Business Platinum card is AMEX small business credit cards do NOT appear on your personal credit report. So it doesn’t count toward card limits other banks have (like Chase)!
What’s the AMEX Business Platinum Bonus Worth?
It depends! After meeting the tiered minimum spending requirements, you’ll have at least 95,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points (75,000 points from welcome bonus + at least 20,000 points from minimum spending).
You can redeem these points to get $950 worth of gift cards through the AMEX portal. But AMEX Business Platinum cardholders can get nearly $1,400 worth of airfare by using the Pay With Points rebate benefit.
- 35% of your points back for ALL First Class or Business Class flights booked through the AMEX travel portal
- 35% of your points back for all flights, including coach tickets, booked with your selected airline through the AMEX travel portal
This table shows how earning 95,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points can get you nearly $1,400 worth of airfare.
|Points||Value of Airfare Through the AMEX Travel Portal||35% Points Rebate Amount|
|95,000 AMEX Membership Rewards Points||$950||33,250 AMEX Membership Rewards points|
|33,250 AMEX Membership Rewards points||~$332||~11,637 AMEX Membership Rewards points|
|~11,637 AMEX Membership Rewards points||~$116||~4,073 AMEX Membership Rewards points|
AMEX Membership Rewards points can potentially be even more valuable if you transfer them directly to any of the 19 AMEX airline and hotel partners to book award travel. And airline alliances and partnerships make it easier to find award flights to your desired destination. For example, you can transfer AMEX Membership Rewards points to Air Canada to book an award flight on United Airlines, a Star Alliance partner airline.
Using points this way can get you unbelievable value! For example, after a trip to Italy a couple years ago, I transferred 70,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points to Air Canada to book a First Class award flight on Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Los Angeles. This same ticket typically costs $11,000+ if you pay cash!

Perks of the American Express Business Platinum
1. Access to Airport Lounges
The Business Platinum® Card from American Express has the most comprehensive lounge access of all. Folks who have the AMEX Business Platinum will get membership to the AMEX Global Lounge Collection, which includes:
- The Centurion Lounge network
- The International American Express Lounges
- Delta Sky Club (when you’re flying Delta that day)
- Priority Pass Select lounges
- Airspace Lounges
- Escape Lounges
- Plaza Premium Lounges
That means you’ll have access to 1,400+ lounges worldwide! Though the vast majority of them are outside the US.
Lots of folks consider Centurion Lounges to be the best lounges in the US. You’ll find them in a handful of US airports, including:
- Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW)
- Denver (DEN) – coming soon
- Houston Intercontinental (IAH)
- Las Vegas (LAS)
- Los Angeles (LAX) – coming soon
- New York-La Guardia (LGA)
- New York (JFK) – coming soon
- Miami (MIA)
- Philadelphia (PHL)
- San Francisco (SFO)
- Seattle-Tacoma (SEA)
Plus, whenever you have a same-day Delta flight, you’ll have access to Delta lounges, too! And there are 50 Delta lounges in North America alone.
If you’re not sure whether you’ll benefit from this card, head to the AMEX Global Lounge Collection, and type the airports you travel to!
2. Automatic Hotel and Rental Car Elite Status
Just for holding the AMEX Business Platinum card, you’re eligible to enroll in several different loyalty programs to get automatic elite status:
- Starwood Gold Elite Status – Earn 3 Starwood points per $1 at Starwood hotels, receive an upgrade to an enhanced room at check-in — corner room, higher floor, or better view, 4:00 pm late checkout, subject to availability at resort and conference center hotels, and more
- Hilton Honors Gold Status – Room upgrades when available, free breakfast at many Hilton brands, 5th night free on award nights, and more
You can also enroll to receive Avis Preferred Club, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards, and National Emerald Club Executive, which come with perks like free upgrades, special discounts, and accelerated earning of free rentals!
Team member Joseph LOVES National Emerald Club Executive status, because you get to choose from a significantly higher quality of cars than without the status.
3. AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts
The benefits you receive will vary by hotel, but you’ll often get things like free breakfast, spa and food credits, late checkout, and room upgrades. Many times folks are upgraded to a suite!
4. Global Entry / TSA PreCheck Credit
The AMEX Business Platinum comes with a credit that covers the application fee for Global Entry ($100) or TSA PreCheck ($85). Membership with these programs lasts 5 years. And the card’s credit renews every 4 years. So you’ll always have the credit when it’s time to renew your membership!
With Global Entry, you don’t have to wait in the long immigration line when you get back from an overseas trip. And with TSA PreCheck, you won’t have to remove your toiletries or computer from your bag. Or take off your jacket at security checkpoints. TSA PreCheck members even get their own aisle!
Team member Joseph used his TSA PreCheck last time he traveled with a friend. He was through security 30+ minutes faster than his travel buddy who did NOT have TSA PreCheck.
If you’re already enrolled in these programs, you can “gift” the credit to someone else by paying for their application with your card, and it will automatically kick in.
Note: Authorized users will get this benefit!
5. Complimentary Internet Benefits
You and your authorized users will each get 10 Gogo in-flight internet passes per calendar year. This can save you LOTS of money, considering how much airlines charge for in-flight internet!
Each pass will last the duration of your “flight segment”, which is defined as “one takeoff and landing on the same aircraft, with the same flight number, between two cities.”
You’ll also get free use of Boingo hotspots, which you’ll often find at the airport. However, I don’t think this perk is super valuable, because lots of airports have free internet, anyway. Plus, the card already comes with lounge access, where you can get free internet in a cozy environment.
6. The Hotel Collection
When you book The Hotel Collection with your AMEX Business Platinum, you can receive up to $75 in hotel credit upon checkout for purchases you’ve made on resort activities like dining and spa treatments (not including taxes & fees). You can book up to 3 rooms at a time, meaning you’ll could get up to $225 in total credit ($75 credit per room X 3 rooms). You’re also eligible for room upgrades, if available. And you’ll get double the points for booking!
7. Lowest Hotel Rate Guarantee
If you book a hotel through the AMEX Travel Portal, and later find the exact same room with the exact same travel information online for cheaper, AMEX will refund you the difference. As long as you submit your claim before your stay, and the price you find is available to the general public (no AAA, senior citizen, government discounts, etc.), you’ll get the cheaper rate!
8. Private Jets Program
The biggest benefit is that you can purchase a Jet Card (payment used to book your private jet) for as little as $50,000, instead of the normal price of $100,000. So you don’t have to commit nearly as much money!
Your card will also give you a 3% bonus to your Jet Card, and an in-flight catering credit up to $250 per trip. Plus a credit for transfer services, up to $200 per trip.
9. Global Dining Collection
The Global Dining Collection gives you access to exclusive events, where you can meet famous chefs, and even get kitchen tours, special menus, and free drinks! Just call the AMEX Business Platinum Concierge, and they’ll make your reservations for you.
Drawbacks and Alternatives to Consider
To earn the total welcome bonus on the AMEX Business Platinum card, you’ll have to meet a steep tiered minimum spending requirement (totaling $20,000 in 3 months). This is one of the larger requirements I’ve seen on a card.
Keep in mind, you might still consider applying even if you can’t meet the the total minimum spending requirement. Because you can still earn 50,000 valuable AMEX Membership Rewards points after you spend $10,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.
Plastiq is a tool I use to meet large spending requirements. This convenient service allows you to pay bills that don’t normally accept credit cards. You’ll pay a small fee, but it might be worth it to unlock the huge bonus on the Business Platinum card.
Another potential drawback is only business owners can qualify for the AMEX Business Platinum. But it’s easier than you might think to qualify for a business card. We’ve written about 7 quick small business ideas that can make you eligible! I qualified for the AMEX Business Platinum thanks to my eBay drop shipping side hustle!
If you’re searching for an alternative lucrative small business credit card offer, I’d recommend the Chase Ink Business Preferred. The sign-up bonus on this card can be worth at least $1,000 in travel!
Wondering if you should apply for the AMEX Business Platinum card? It’s a great time to consider adding this card to your wallet because the welcome bonus is the highest it’s ever been!
After meeting the tiered minimum spending requirements, you can earn a total of 95,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points. With the points you’ll earn from the intro bonus and completing the minimum spending, you’ll have enough points to get $950 in gift cards or nearly $1,400 worth of airfare.
You can potentially get even more value when you transfer points to 19 airline and hotel partners. For example, I once transferred 70,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points to book a First Class award seat on an ~11 hour Lufthansa flight. The same seat was selling for more than $11,000 if you paid cash!
For many folks, the perks on the Business Platinum card can easily justify paying the card’s $450 annual fee. You can actually make a profit (like team member Meghan did) by taking advantage of certain AMEX Offers you get as a cardholder.
Don’t forget, AMEX small business credit cards do NOT appear on your personal credit report. That’s one of the reasons a lot of savvy miles & points enthusiasts apply for AMEX small business cards!
