I have the Citi Premier℠ Card. I originally opened it for 2 reasons:
- The sign-up bonus (currently worth at least $625 in travel), which you’ll earn after meeting minimum spend requirements
- The bonus miles on gas (an effective 3.75% back in travel rewards at gas stations)
But the card has other ongoing benefits that are helpful to travelers, too, besides all those Citi ThankYou points you can earn. I’ll spell out the most important card benefits of the Citi Premier to help you decide if it’s worth opening (and keeping!).

When you sign-up for the Citi Premier card, you’ll earn 50,000 Citi ThankYou points after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening.
The points you earn are flexible, which means you can use them in several different ways. Perhaps the most popular is by transferring your points to any of Citi’s airline partners, such as:
- Flying Blue (Air France / KLM)
- Singapore Airlines
- Virgin Atlantic
This can be of great value. For example, you can book a round-trip coach flight to Hawaii on United Airlines by transferring 35,000 points to Singapore Airlines.
Or, you can use the points to book travel through Citi’s ThankYou travel portal, where they’re worth 1.25 cents each toward flights, hotels, rental cars, and cruises. That means this sign-up bonus is worth – at a minimum – $625 in travel (50,000 points X 1.25 cents per point). That’s a great deal, considering the annual fee is waived the 12 months!
I used Citi ThankYou points to cover the rental car during my visit to Cancun. That way I had more money for sensible purchases like an exorbitantly priced Mexican palm leaf straw fedodo.
This bonus is a one-time thing, though. It’s not an ongoing bonus. Here’s what you can expect year after year when you open the Citi Premier.
Solid Earning Rate for Road Warriors
With the Citi Premier, you’ll earn:
- 3 Citi ThankYou points per $1 spent on travel including gas stations (also including airfare, hotels, car rental agencies, parking, tolls, and much more)
- 2 Citi ThankYou points per $1 spent at restaurants and on select entertainment (like amusement parks, museums, sporting events, movies, and more)
- 1 Citi ThankYou point per $1 spent on all other purchases
Earning 3 Citi ThankYou points is like earning 3.75% back towards travel. That’s because you can redeem Citi ThankYou points through Citi’s online portal for 1.25 cents each toward airfare, hotel, rental car, etc (3 Citi ThankYou points X 1.25 cents each = 3.75 cents).
When I signed-up for the Citi Premier, I was driving 3 hours per day for work. Because of the generous travel earning rate (including gas stations), I earned ~10,500 points my first year on gas alone.
Baggage Delay Insurance
If you pay for your ticket at least in part with your Citi Premier card (or with Citi ThankYou points), you and your immediate family will receive up to $100 each if your bags are delayed 6+ hours. Your immediate family will even be covered if you aren’t with them!
Trip Delay Insurance
Again, when you pay for your ticket with either your Citi Premier or ThankYou points, you’ll be covered in the event of a trip delay of 12+ hours. You and your immediate family can receive up to $500 for reasonable expenses like hotels, meals, and transportation!
Trip cancellation & interruption
You may also be reimbursed up to $5,000 per covered traveler per trip if your trip is canceled or interrupted for certain reasons pertaining to illness, personal matters, or travel or weather issues such as:
- Becoming too ill to travel (with proof from a medical practitioner)
- Getting laid off or fired from your job
- Getting killed
- Severe weather causes all travel to stop for at least 24 hours to or from your destination
Hopefully you’ll never have to use this, but it’s nice to know you have it!
Citi Price Rewind
Citi Price Rewind is a unique perk you’ll find on all Citi personal cards. When you pay for registered items at certain online merchants, Citi automatically checks for a lower price at other merchants. If they find the same item at a lower price within 60 days of your initial purchase date, you may receive a credit for the price difference! To be eligible for coverage, you must pay for the item at least in part with your Citi card.
Harlan uses Earny to completely automate his Citi Price Rewind claims. It’s especially helpful for tracking price drops on Amazon!
You’re limited to a reimbursement of $200 per item. And the maximum coverage is $1,000 per calendar year.
Citi Private Pass
Citi Private Pass allows you to purchase tickets to events like concerts and sports before they’re released to the public. You can even buy special VIP packages, depending on the event you plan to attend.
By paying for an eligible item with the Citi Premier card, you can extend the manufacturer’s warranty by an additional 24 months (total coverage between both the manufacturer’s warranty and extended warranty cannot exceed 84 months).

The more you know about your credit card benefits, the more cash you can save. If you truly use every perk that comes with the Citi Premier, it’s an absolute no-brainer.
The Price Rewind feature can save you cash if the item you purchased drops in price within 60 days of your purchase. The travel benefits cover you as long as you pay at least in part with your Citi Premier.
And that’s not to mention the solid earning rates you’ll receive on travel and gas stations, along with the sign-up bonus worth $625 in travel!
