You can always hold American Airlines paid flights for up to 24 hours and award flights for up to 5 days (when you book in advance).
Via Reddit, American Airlines is testing a feature that allows folks to hold a paid ticket on select flights for 3, 5, or 7 days (for a small fee). So you can lock-in the price now and pay or cancel later!
Find out how this new feature works and when it might be useful!
How to Place Your Ticket on an Extended Hold
You can now put certain American Airlines paid flights on hold for up to 7 days.
You can hold all paid flights for free up to 24 hours. Here’s a look at how much a longer hold will cost per person:
- 3 day hold – ~$8
- 5 day hold – ~$10
- 7 day hold – ~$12
But for now it seems American Airlines is just testing this new option. I’ve only found these extended hold times available for flights from Miami to Los Angeles. But you may get this offer for other routes.
This is only good for flights booked directly through American Airlines. You can NOT put American Airlines flights booked through the Citi Travel Center on hold.
Book your ticket as you normally would and at checkout choose to hold instead of making your payment.
Keep in mind, if you let the hold period expire, you’ll lose your itinerary and have to rebook at new prices. And the hold fee is non-refundable.
So you may want to mark on your calendar to purchase your ticket on the hold end date by 11:59 pm in the time zone of your departure flight.
Should You Take Advantage of This Additional Hold Time?
While extended hold times seem to only be available on select paid flights, I’d love to see this feature stick around and expand to all American Airlines flights!
If you find a cheap fare, putting the flight on hold locks-in the price until you decide if you can fit it into your schedule.
Or you can put a flight with a good price on hold to wait and see if a better deal comes along.
It’s also helpful for folks who are trying to coordinate travel with a group. You can tentatively reserve your seat while you check to see if your friends or family member can get on the same flight.
However, I do NOT recommend putting American Airlines mistake fares on hold. That’s because American Airlines has chosen not to honor mistake fares for tickets on hold in the past.
You can currently hold certain American Airlines paid flights for 3,5, or 7 days (for a fee of up to ~$12 per person). And of course, you can always hold American Airlines paid flights for 24 hours or award flights for up to 5 days for free.
This is a terrific way for folks to lock-in a good price on flights while they confirm their plans.
It appears that American Airlines is just testing this extended hold period. And I was only able to find it offered on flights from Miami to Los Angeles.
But let me know if you find other routes that let you take advantage of this extended hold period!
