Southwest is having a sale with some flights as low as $69 1-way. But Friday & Sunday travel is excluded, so we won’t be booking any quick weekend getaways.
Southwest Fare Sale
Link: Southwest Fare Sale
Southwest has a fare sale through May 8, 2014, with flights starting at $69 each way for travel from August 25, 2014, to October 30, 2014.
The sale ends at 11:59 pm on May 8, 2014, based on the time zone of the city you’re flying from.
Southwest uses a revenue based frequent flyer program, so a fare sale means that both cash AND award bookings using points cost less. So you can use some of the points from the Southwest sign-up bonus to book flights.
You can book your trip using points even if you’re not sure of your plans, because there are no change fees and you get the points back in your account if you cancel the reservation.
If you cancel a paid flight on Southwest, the ticketed passenger gets a credit which can be used up to 1 year after the booking was made, and there’s no change fee, as long you cancel at least 10 minutes before your flight.
If you’ve already booked trips between August 25, 2014, and October 30, 2014, you can check to see if they cost less since you can cancel and rebook your flights without paying a fee.
Here’s a way to get up to 20% off Southwest fares!
Earning Southwest Points
In case you’re low on points, you can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points instantly from your Chase Sapphire Preferred card, Chase Ink Plus card, or Chase Ink Bold card to Southwest Airlines on a 1:1 ratio.
Even though Southwest is having a sale, I’m waiting for a better sale because Friday & Sunday travel is NOT discounted. I just can’t take off on Wednesday because the prices are lower!
And this isn’t 1 of Southwest’s better sales where the prices start at $49.
I’m also not booking because the tickets have lots of restrictions:
1. Sale prices are not valid for travel on Fridays & Sundays.
2. Travel to Florida or Nevada are restricted to Sunday, Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday departures. From Florida or Nevada, you can fly only on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday. And if you’re flying from Florida to Nevada, you can only fly on Tuesday & Wednesday.
3. You can only travel from August 25, 2014, to October 30, 2014.
You can read all the restrictions on the Southwest fare sale page.
Although this isn’t the best Southwest sale, you can use your Companion Pass to save money! Your companion flies free on BOTH cash and points tickets.
But it doesn’t hurt to check to see if a flight you’ve booked now costs less cash or points. You can always cancel and re-book at the lower price without paying any fees!
Other airlines haven’t started to match Southwest’s low fares, but I’ll update this post if they do.
