Delta is offering a 20% discount on purchasing miles up to 11:59 pm EST Sunday, July 31, 2011.

So instead of regularly buying a Delta mile for 3.5 cents, you pay “only” 2.8 cents per mile.

You also don’t have to pay taxes on the purchase  due to the political posturing over the buudget in Washington.

In general, buying miles is a lousy deal, but it may make sense to buy a few miles to top off your account for an immediate award which you know is available.

For example, buying 2,000 Delta miles may make sense if your award costs 40,000 miles, but you have only 38,000 miles in your account.

would purchasing miles count towards the $100 purchase at Delta to get you 5000 MR points?

@GRog – The terms say that “This bonus points offer is only available with a minimum purchase of $100 for qualifying flights.” However, some folks on FT are speculating that anything coded as a Delta purchase will count.

I don’t have any personal experience, so I can’t say, but it would be great if you could get it to work!
