Emily and I used our Southwest Companion Pass to fly to Ohio for Thanksgiving.
And you can watch free TV on your tablet computer or phone on Southwest flights thanks to a partnership with DISH TV.
I was curious to check it out and see if worked well and if the TV would stream smoothly. The free TV worked well on our other flights, but I wanted to try it out again for consistency.
I love everything about Southwest except for the extremely s-l-o-w internet on their flights. I don’t think I’ve been on even ONE Southwest flight where the internet was faster than dial-up internet. But that’s about my only gripe with Southwest and it is otherwise our favorite way to fly within the US.
My Experience Watching TV On Southwest
I clicked on “Entertainment” on my web browser after connecting to the “Southwest WiFi” network on the flight.
You have to watch a short commercial before reaching a page which asks for your email address.
You don’t have to enter your email address (if you don’t want to receive DISH TV email), but can click the link below which says “No Thanks, Continue to TV.”
There are about ~13 channels to watch for free, though you have to pay $4 for NFL RedZone.
I checked out a few channels and the video was extremely smooth.
I usually prefer surfing the web than to watch TV, so I was extremely jealous when the free TV worked much better than the wireless internet which has a $8 fee!
If you have a tablet computer or smart phone, you can watch TV for free on most Southwest flights!
This can be especially useful if you’re traveling with kids or just need some time to veg out!
