In 2012 I wrote about all the ways to earn Hyatt points.  So it’s time for an update!

Emily and I love Hyatt and we’ve had many memorable stays at their hotels, all using points or free night certificates.

And having elite status with Hyatt hasn’t hurt, either.  We’ve gotten suite upgrades, lounge access, and free food and drinks on lots of trips!

Let’s see how folks can earn lots of Hyatt points from credit card sign-up bonuses and spending!

How to Earn Hyatt Points Directly

There’s only ONE credit card that earns Hyatt points directly.  The Chase Hyatt card gets you 2 free nights at any Hyatt after you spend $1,000 in purchases in the 1st 3 months from opening your account.

Hyatt hotels include:

If you use the 2 free nights at a top category 7 Hyatt (which normally cost 30,000 points per night), the sign-up bonus is worth 60,000 points (30,000 points per night x 2 nights).

You Could Use the 2 Free Nights From the Chase Hyatt Card at the Top-Tier Park Hyatt New York

With this card, you also get:

  • 3 points per $1 you spend at Hyatt hotels
  • 2 points per $1 you spend at restaurants, airline tickets purchased directly from the airline, and car rental agencies
  • 1 point per $1 you spend on everything else
  • Platinum elite status (free premium internet, better rooms when available, late check-out)
  • A free night in a category 1 to 4 Hyatt each year on your account anniversary
  • No foreign transaction fees

The $75 annual fee is waived for the 1st year.  It’s worth keeping the card because the free night at a category 1 to 4 Hyatt on your account anniversary more than makes up for the annual fee!

And there are sometimes deals targeted to Chase Hyatt cardholders, like a promotion to get 20% of your points back on award stays.

You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio.  There’s no fee to convert points, and transfers are usually instant.

The sign-up bonus on the Chase Ink Plus is 60,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after you spend $5,000 in new purchases in the 1st 3 months of opening your account.

This card makes it easy to earn lots of Chase Ultimate Rewards points!  That’s because you get:

  • 5 points for every $1 you spend at office supply stores and cellular phone, landline, internet and cable TV (to a maximum of $50,000 in combined purchases per account anniversary year)
  • 2 points for every $1 you spend on gas and hotels
  • 1 points for every $1 you spend on everything else
  • No foreign transaction fees

You could get 2 nights at a top category 7 Hyatt with 60,000 points, like the Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa.  Rooms there can cost over $1,000 per night!

3.   Chase Freedom

If you also have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus, or Chase Ink Bold (no longer available), you can transfer points earned with the Chase Freedom card to Hyatt.

The sign-up bonus is 15,000 points after you spend $500 on purchases in the 1st 3 months from opening your account.  And you’ll get another 2,500 points when you add an authorized user and they make a purchase in the 1st 3 months of account opening.

Combined, that’s more than enough for a night at a category 3 hotel, like the Hyatt Regency Toronto.

My favorite thing about the Chase Freedom is the rotating 5X point category bonuses.  Each quarter, you’ll earn 5 points per $1 you spend (to a maximum of $1,500 in spending per quarter) in categories like gas stations, restaurants, or Amazon.

The Chase Freedom has no annual fee, which makes it a good card to keep for a long time.  This could help your credit score (and build a relationship with Chase, which has some of the best miles and points cards!).

4.   Chase Ink Cash

Like the Chase Freedom, points earned from the Chase Ink Cash card can be transferred to Hyatt if you also have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Plus, or Chase Ink Bold card.

  • 1 point per $1 you spend on everything else
  • Primary auto rental insurance (CDW) when renting for business purposes, plus purchase and extended warranty protection
  • NO annual fee

You could transfer the sign-up bonus to Hyatt and get a free night at all-inclusive hotels like the Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos or Hyatt Ziva Puerto Vallarta

You Can Use Points for Stays at All-Inclusive Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara Hotels

Emily and I haven’t tried Hyatt’s all-inclusive hotels yet, but folks who have say they’re fantastic!

Bottom Line

There are lots of ways to get Hyatt points through credit card sign-up bonuses and spending!  And that can get you lots of Big Travel with Small Money at some very nice hotels!

The Chase Hyatt card earns Hyatt points directly (and has a great sign-up bonus of 2 free nights at any Hyatt!).  You can also transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt from cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Ink Plus.

I prefer transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt because there are lots of ways to earn extra points through category bonuses or shopping through the Chase Ultimate Rewards mall.

What’s your favorite way to earn Hyatt points?

You can buy Hyatt points in 1000 point increments for $24.00. Log into your Hyatt Gold Passport account and look for Earning Options.

I can no longer travel due to disability. I used Hyatt to travel many times previously. Now I am only 91 points short of a reward. I do not have a Chase card and prefer not to damage my credit score by applying for a new card.

So I wonder if you know of any way Hyatt would reward me the 91 points without Chase or a stay, dinner at Hyatt? Thank you,

Is The Sapphire Preferred a different card than the Sapphire? Can I get the Preferred if I have the regular Sapphire?

I agree with @lostmybuzz. It would be nice to have a comprehensive list of sources that can transfer points/miles INTO Hyatt. As well as the best ways to transfer (like direct or thru the 3rd party).

What about ways to earn points without using credit cards? Do they have an eshopping site like airlines do? Can’t find it so far
