Is This a Good Deal?
Hilton normally sells points for 1.25 cents per point, which isn’t very good. But with this deal, you’re buying Hilton points for 0.49 to 0.55 cents per point.
For example, if you bought 100,000 Hilton points for $550, you’d pay 0.55 cents per point ($550 cost of points / 100,000 points). But with the 10% American Express discount, you’d pay $495 for 100,000 points, or 0.49 cents per point ($495 cost of points / 100,000).
The math works out similarly for the other deals.
You can only buy a maximum of 3 sets of points (there are 3 deals so you can get 1 of each). And you have to have a Hilton HHonors account before the deal goes live.So will you save money buying points to redeem for award nights instead of paying cash for a room? I did some random searches to find out.
1. Embassy Suites, Buffalo, New York
A 2-night award stay at the Embassy Suites in Buffalo on June 12, 2014, costs 50,000 Hilton points per night, or 100,000 points total. You can buy the points through the Daily Getaways deal for $550, or $495 if you use your American Express card.
The cheapest paid rate for the same room and dates on the Hilton website is ~$444 including taxes.
And you’ll pay even less if you search for the same hotel on Kayak. In this case, the cheapest (non-refundable) rate was through hotels.com, at ~$414 for a 2-night stay.
So in this example, it’s definitely NOT worth it to buy points through Daily Getaways for an award stay. You’ll pay much more for the points, even with the 10% American Express discount.
2. Hilton Berlin, Germany
It costs 100,000 Hilton points total (50,000 points per night) for a 2-night stay at the Hilton Berlin on July 17, 2014. You can buy the points through the Daily Getaways deal for $550, or $495 if you use your American Express card.
The cheapest paid (non-refundable) rate for the same hotel and dates on the Hilton website is ~267 Euros, or ~$366.
A search on Kayak found the cheapest rate on Priceline. The total cost for a non-refundable room is ~$353.
Again, in this case, it is far cheaper to pay for a room than buy points through the Daily Getaways deal.
3. Hampton Inn Jacksonville I-95 South, Florida
The Hampton Inn Jacksonville is a Hilton Category 1 hotel, so it only costs 5,000 points per night. There aren’t many Category 1 hotels, and most are overseas. I searched for a room on June 30, 2014.
You can’t buy only 5,000 points through the Daily Getaways deal, but if you do the math, you’d pay ~$28 for the points (5,000 points x 0.55 cents per point), or ~$25 if you used your American Express card (5,000 points x 0.49 cents per point).
If you paid for a room through Hilton, the lowest non-refundable rate is ~$76. That’s much more expensive than using points from Daily Getaways.
A Kayak search found the same rate through Priceline.
In this situation, it’s far better to use points from the Daily Getaways deal! I’d much rather pay ~$25 for a room than ~$76! But remember, you have to buy a minimum of 100,000 points through the deal, so this would not be good if you couldn’t find a use for the rest of the points!
What Else Can You Do With Hilton Points?
You can transfer Hilton points to 40+ airlines, including Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Etihad, Hawaiian Airlines, Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, and Thai.
But Hilton points generally transfer to airline partners at a rate of 1,000 miles for every 10,000 Hilton points. So you are paying 4.9 (if you use the 10% American Express discount) to 5.5 cents per mile which is a TERRIBLE value.
Unless you are topping off your account for an award, transferring Hilton points to airline miles is NOT a good deal.
With today’s Daily Getaways, you can buy Hilton hotel points for 0.55 cents per point. And if you use your American Express card, you’ll get an additional 10% discount.
If you want to use the points for a hotel stay, check the cash price of the hotel 1st before you buy points. In many cases it’s NOT worth it. But if you can find a lower category room, it could be a good deal.
And it’s generally not worth it to transfer Hilton points to airlines, even with this deal. I would only do it if you needed to top-off your account for an award ticket.
Remember, the deal goes live at 1:00 pm EST today.
