If you have the The Platinum Card® from American Express, check your email for a targeted offer!

AMEX is giving up to 20,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points for adding authorized users by October 20, 2017.

Here’s what you need to know about this deal:

Is This a Good Deal?

AMEX Membership Rewards points are very valuable!  Because you can transfer them to airline partners like British Airways and Delta for Big Travel.

For example, AMEX Membership Rewards points transfer to British Airways at a 1:1 ratio.  So by adding just 1 authorized user to your account, you’ll have enough points for a short-haul flight from London to Milan!

Any Flight Outside the US Under 650 Miles, Like a Flight Between London and Milan, Costs Just 4,500 British Airways Avios Points

Keep in mind that you’ll pay $175 for the first 3 authorized users you add, and $175 per additional user after that.  However, you can add additional Gold card members to your AMEX Platinum account for free.  And Gold card authorized users will trigger the bonus!

But American Express requires the Social Security Number of any authorized user you add.  So you can NOT add your pet bunny.  And you’ll need to consider whether your authorized users will apply for Chase cards in the future (especially if they’re new to miles and points).

Because authorized user accounts WILL count toward Chase’s “5/24 rule.”  That is, if the authorized user has opened ~5 or more credit cards (from any bank) in the past 24 months (NOT counting Chase business cards and these other business cards)they’re unlikely to get approved for most Chase cards.

You wouldn’t want your friends and family to miss out on some of the best travel rewards cards later!

Bottom Line

If targeted, you can earn 5,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points for each authorized user you add to your AMEX Platinum card by October 20, 2017.  Up to a maximum of 20,000 bonus AMEX Membership Rewards points!

To receive the bonus, each authorized user will need to spend $500 within the first 3 months of being added to your account.

Let me know if you’ve been targeted!
