Update:   One or more card offers in this post are no longer available.  Check our Hot Deals for the latest offers.

The Starwood Preferred Guest card used to offer a 10,000 point bonus after the 1st purchase and an additional bonus of 15,000 points after spending $15,000 on the card within 6 months.

Spending $15,000 on the card is a daunting task, so there was a lot of excitement when Starwood had limited time promotions in 2010 and in July 2011 which offered 10,000 points after the first purchase and 20,000 points after spending only $4,500 after 3 months.

However, Starwood has changed the term of their regular offer so that you get 10,000 points after the first purchase and an additional 15,000 points after spending $5,000 within the first 6 months.

Free Frequent Flyer Miles has posted that the SPG business card also been changed to offer the additional 15,000 points after spending $5,000 within the first 6 months.  So you could potentially get up to 50,000 bonus SPG points with both the cards!

This is great news, because it makes it much easier to get the full bonus with the SPG card!

I love SPG points, especially when used for Cash & Points awards.  I’m generally always short of hotel points so I get excited when it gets easier to earn hotel points.

Read my previous post on why I applied for the SPG credit card to learn more about the benefits of the SPG program.

I recommend redeeming SPG points only for hotels, but you could also transfer SPG points to American Airlines if you’re looking to lock in lifetime elite status (since the rules are changing on 1st December).

Transferring 20,000 SPG points will get you 25,000 American Airline miles with the 25% bonus for transfers in multiples of 25,000 SPG points.

Bottom Line:

The current offer for the Starwoods SPG credit card makes it much easier to get the additional 15,000 SPG points since you have to spend $5,000 in 6 months versus $15,000 in 6 months.

Hello,

I looked at applying for this card and was wondering if I already had a AMEX card if I can still get the sign up bonuses.

The application said something about not applicable if they see you already have an american express card.

As a newbee I was looking at signing up for the SPG card to use the hotel points to book some nights this year to include adult daughter or 3 people (2beds) in one room.

I have looked around and cannot see where this issue was addressed previously

In testing using the points option, before signing up for the card, SPG reponds back, whether using “points or cash” and using “all points” at any SPG hotel, with this statement

“SPG Free Night Awards booked online are limited to 2 guests per room.”

Is this solely a SPG rule or is it this rule also applicable at other hotel free nights

I just signed up for the SPG card, but I couldn’t find anywhere in the terms where

it states that I will receive 15,000 additional points after spending $5,000 in 6 months. Is that offer gone already or do you receive that info when you get the card in the

mail?

Thanks

@Lana Hagenbucher – Depends which version you signed up for. You can confirm the bonus when you call to activate the card. Sometimes you can’t see the full offer terms if you are logged into your American Express account, so try logging out or using a different browser.

do they still have the 25k spg offer for the non business card?

@jacob – Both the personal and business version of the SPG card offer a 25K bonus. You can find them in the Hot Deals tab. I’d double check to see that the link is for 25K since some folks see a lower offer if they are logged into their AMEX account.

When registering for this card for my wife and myself. Can we use the same SPG number so all the points go into the single account? Sorry just new to this. thank you!

@John – No problem! I don’t recommend using your SPG number for your wife’s application. But you can combine points between your wife’s account and yours if you live at the same address.
