The Starwood Preferred Guest card used to offer a 10,000 point bonus after the 1st purchase and an additional bonus of 15,000 points after spending $15,000 on the card within 6 months.
Spending $15,000 on the card is a daunting task, so there was a lot of excitement when Starwood had limited time promotions in 2010 and in July 2011 which offered 10,000 points after the first purchase and 20,000 points after spending only $4,500 after 3 months.
However, Starwood has changed the term of their regular offer so that you get 10,000 points after the first purchase and an additional 15,000 points after spending $5,000 within the first 6 months.
Free Frequent Flyer Miles has posted that the SPG business card also been changed to offer the additional 15,000 points after spending $5,000 within the first 6 months. So you could potentially get up to 50,000 bonus SPG points with both the cards!
This is great news, because it makes it much easier to get the full bonus with the SPG card!
I love SPG points, especially when used for Cash & Points awards. I’m generally always short of hotel points so I get excited when it gets easier to earn hotel points.
Read my previous post on why I applied for the SPG credit card to learn more about the benefits of the SPG program.
I recommend redeeming SPG points only for hotels, but you could also transfer SPG points to American Airlines if you’re looking to lock in lifetime elite status (since the rules are changing on 1st December).
Transferring 20,000 SPG points will get you 25,000 American Airline miles with the 25% bonus for transfers in multiples of 25,000 SPG points.
The current offer for the Starwoods SPG credit card makes it much easier to get the additional 15,000 SPG points since you have to spend $5,000 in 6 months versus $15,000 in 6 months.
