The American Express Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) card is one of the best travel credit-cards for everyday spending. That’s because you get a 25% bonus on every 20,000 Starpoints transferred to airline partners.
However, the sign-up bonus on this card has been only 10,000 points after the first purchase and another 15,000 points after spending $15,000 within 6 months.
In June last year there was an offer to earn 30,000 Starpoints after spending only $1,000 within 3 months. But that offer was active for only a few weeks.
I’m hopeful that in the next week or so there will be a new offer for the AMEX SPG card, similar to what was offered last year!
My speculation (yes, this is complete speculation!) is based on:
1) A current targeted offer for a AMEX SPG card which offers 10,000 points after the first purchase and another 20,000 points after spending $4,500 within 3 months. Targeted offers are sometimes precursors to similar offers being available more broadly, so I’m hoping that this happen.
2) Rick, The Frugal Travel Guy, hinted at a new offer for his “favorite card,” which is the American Express SPG card.
3) A reader wrote in saying that a telephone representative asked him to call back in mid-to-late July to get a better deal on the SPG card.
I cancelled my American Express SPG card in early 2009 so I’m curious to test out the theory that American Express will allow me to get a new sign-on bonus if I have not had that particular card (in this case the SPG card) for the last 2 years.
I’m low on hotel points and 30,000 SPG points would be a great way to have more Big Travel with Small Money!
WorldWanderlusting writes about how he managed to get an additional 5,000 Starpoints just by asking. So it may not hurt to call or send a message to American Express asking them if they could match this offer for you.
Do you think there will be a new SPG offer soon? Tell us about it in the comments!
