Good news for folks with travel plans in late summer or early fall!  You can now book Southwest flights through September 29, 2017.

Southwest flies to lots of fun places in the US, and even some international destinations (south of the border).  Plus, Emily and I love Southwest because of their extra friendly traveler policies, like 2 free checked bags and no change or cancellation fees.

You can now book Southwest flights (paid and award tickets) through September 29, 2017.

This is great for folks who want to make end-of-summer and early fall plans.  If you’re never quite ready to give up the warm weather, you can book cheap tickets to sunny destinations like Aruba, Belize, or Miami!

And Southwest will soon add more destinations, including flights to George Town, Grand Cayman starting in June 2017.

With Southwest, it’s best to book early, (especially for popular summer months!), because if your plans change, Southwest has a great refund policy!  And if fares go down, you can cancel and re-book at the lower price.

1.   Paid Ticket Cancellation Policy

You can cancel a paid Southwest ticket within 24 hours of booking for a full refund.  And refundable fares, like Business Select and Anytime tickets, are fully refundable within 1 year of the date of issue.  Or you can apply the value towards another ticket.

You can cancel non-refundable Wanna Get Away fares without a fee as long as you cancel at least 10 minutes before your departure.  And the value of the ticket can be used towards another flight within 1 year of the original ticket’s date of issue.

2.   Award Ticket Cancellation Policy

There are no fees for changing or cancelling an award ticket.  And the points will be immediately redeposited into your account!

To get the Southwest Companion Pass, you need to earn 110,000 Southwest points in a calendar year.  Then a friend or family member can fly with you for (almost) free for up to 2 years.  That can be worth thousands of dollars, depending on how much you fly!

The quickest way to earn enough Southwest points for the Companion Pass is with the sign-up bonuses from the Chase Southwest credit cards like the:

Plus, you can still earn the Companion Pass with Starwood points, but only through March 31, 2017!

Note:  If you want more Southwest points, you can transfer the Chase Ultimate Rewards points you earn with the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, Ink Business Preferred, Chase Ink Bold (no longer available), and Chase Ink Plus (no longer available) to Southwest at a 1:1 ratio.  But they will NOT count towards the Southwest Companion Pass.

Bottom Line

The Southwest schedule is now open through September 29, 2017.  Make sure you book quickly before the dates you want are gone.  Because if your plans change, you change or cancel your flight without penalty.

And if you have the Southwest Companion Pass, a friend or family member can join you for (nearly) free anytime you fly Southwest for up to 2 years!

Just be careful if you have a forced overnight stay due to a mechanical airplane fault on Southwest. If they run out of hotel stay vouchers your hotel bill will not be reimbursed no matter what they tell you at the boarding gate. This happened to me recently.
