Via Running With Miles, Southwest is having a sale with fares starting at $35 one-way.  And there are some some excellent deals!

I found flights from Fort Lauderdale to Belize for just $69, or 2,880 Southwest points, one-way.

If you’ve already booked Southwest flights, this is a great time to see if the fare price has dropped.  Because you can cancel and re-book at the lower price for free!

You must book by March 15, 2018, at 11:59 pm in the time zone of the origin city.  And there are blackout dates.

Here are the details of the deal.

With this Southwest sale, fares start at $35 one-way, although most fares are higher.  But if you’re flexible with your travel dates and times, you can find some great prices.

There are cheap flights from:

  • Las Vegas to Long Beach for $35 one-way
  • Washington, DC, to Orlando for $45 one-way
  • San Francisco to San Diego for $49 one-way
  • Ft. Lauderdale to Belize for $69 one-way
  • Tampa Bay to Havana for $99 one-way

To get the deal, you must book by March 15, 2018, at 11:59 pm in the time zone of the origin city.  Here’s what you need to know:

  • 21-day advance purchase required
  • Domestic travel is valid from April 3 to June 13, 2018, and August 21 to October 31, 2018
  • Travel to and from San Juan, Puerto Rico, is valid from April 3 to May 17, 2018, and September 5 to October 31, 2018
  • International travel is valid from April 3, 2018, to May 17, 2018, and August 21 to October 31, 2018
  • Fares are NOT available to or from both Norfolk and Rochester
  • Blackout dates and other restrictions apply

If you already have a Southwest flight, this is a great time to check and see if your flight is cheaper.  Because you can always cancel and re-book your ticket for free!

And because the price of Southwest award seats are tied to the cash price of the ticket, you can book award flights for less, too!  The cheapest $35 one-way ticket will only cost 1,386 Southwest points!

Southwest Tips

In addition to the savings, there are lots of other benefits to flying Southwest including:

  • Cancel Without Penalty – You can always book now and cancel later.  On award flights the points and taxes will be refunded.  And if you book a paid flight, as long as you cancel within 10 minutes before your flight, you’ll get a credit towards another Southwest flight (good for 1 year).
  • Change Without Fees – If your plans change, you can make adjustments to your flight for free.  However, if your new flight costs more, you’ll have to pay the difference.
  • 2 Checked Bags for Free – Every passenger gets 2 free checked bags.  This saves you ~$25 per bag.

Hotel Information

If you book a sale flight, remember there are lots of ways to get cheap or free hotel rooms with points from credit card bonuses and spending.

To find hotels that can be booked with points, I use Hotel Hustle (which even shows you if rooms are actually available!) or AwardMapper.

Remember, you can transfer flexible points like Chase Ultimate Rewards or American Express Membership Rewards to different hotel programs.

Note:  If you prefer to book paid stays, check out discount sites like OrbitzExpedia, or TravelPony for deals.  But remember you won’t get stay credits or points (and might not have your elite status recognized!).

Airbnb is another terrific way to save money on accommodations, especially for longer stays.  Here are some tips on how to negotiate a better Airbnb price, and how to find a safe and comfortable Airbnb.

Hey, that picture is not from Belize. This is the Mayan Temple I also know as “Gran Jaguar” located in Peten, Guatemala.
